Sean Spicer Regrets Lying About Trump Inauguration Size

Sean Spicer
In the aftermath of his surprise appearance at last night's Emmy Awards, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer told the New York Times that he does have some regrets from his time behind the White House podium.

In an interview on Monday morning, Mr. Spicer said he now regrets one of his most infamous moments as press secretary: his decision to charge into the White House briefing room in January and criticize accurate news reports that Barack Obama’s inauguration crowd was bigger than President Donald J. Trump’s.

“Of course I do, absolutely,” Mr. Spicer said.

[snip]

As Mr. Spicer prepared to return to Washington, he was asked if he was worried about President Trump taking offense over the skit — which many viewers saw as lampooning the president’s preoccupation with the size of his inauguration crowd.

“I certainly hope not,” Mr. Spicer said after a brief pause. “This was an attempt to poke a little fun at myself and add a little bit of levity to the event.”

Spicer's big moment came in the opening sequence as host Stephen Colbert mused aloud about how many people might be watching the Emmy Awards.

Spicer appeared onstage with a mockup of his former press briefing room podium and recited almost verbatim his now famous "inaugural crowd size" announcement. “This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period — both in person and around the world,” he declared with a semi-straight face.

The Times piece also chronicles the lengths Emmy producers went to in order to keep Spicer's appearance a secret including Spicer traveling from Washington to LA "in disguise."

Sean Spicer's Big Night At The Emmy Awards

At last night's Emmy Awards, folks were flabbergasted when former White House press secretary Sean Spicer rolled out onstage via podium during the opening sequence to announce, "This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period — both in person and around the world."

At first, you saw people in the audience try to figure out, "Is that really Sean Spicer?"

And then, folks thought it was funny that the producers were able to get the gag to happen.

But right after that you kind of realized that this was the "normalization" of Sean Spicer. The guy who stood at the White House press room podium and lied to the American public over and over again.

And it didn't feel very good.

From Aaron Blake at the Washington Post:

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer got a turn on one of Hollywood's glitziest stages Sunday night. And he used it to laugh about the falsehoods he told the American people in an attempt to rehabilitate his image.

I'm all for a good laugh. And I'll add up front that there are political issues on which people have extremely strong feelings and unfortunately can't see the other side — we all have blind spots and should be mindful of that. But inherent in Spicer's appearance Sunday night was an acknowledgment that he sold the American people a bill of goods from the White House lectern. He essentially admitted to blatantly misrepresenting President Trump's inauguration crowd size, and he and those assembled all had a good laugh at it.

Melissa McCarthy Picks Up Emmy Award For "Sean Spicer" Portrayal On SNL

Sean Spicer may be gone from the White House, we'll always have Melissa McCarthy's hysterical, over the top portrayal of the former White House press secretary on Saturday Night Live to relish.

And just to show "Spicey" is the gift that keeps giving, McCarthy must be relishing her new Emmy Award she picked up last night at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. That statue sitting on McCarthy's mantle was for her hosting gig on SNL including her performance as the manic, unhinged press secretary.

You'll recall the portrayal got so much attention Trump pulled Spicey from press briefing duties and sent Sarah Huckabee Sanders in his place.

At the time of McCarthy's appearances as "Spicey," Sean attempted to blow off the jabs with faux good sportsmanship. But his true colors showed when he commented that SNL had "gone from being funny to just bad."

This is McCarthy's second Emmy win having previously won for CBS’ Mike & Molly. I'm not surprised to learn she has been nominated for all five of her hosting gigs on SNL.

The Creative Arts Emmys took place Sunday in Los Angeles.

The main Emmy broadcast will air Sunday, Sept. 17 on CBS.

But for now, let's take a trip on the "way back machine" and enjoy McCarthy's brilliant, no-holds barred performance below.

NYT: Spicer Turned Off Press Briefing Cameras So Trump Would Stop Criticizing Him

Sean Spicer
New York Times reporter Glenn Thrush, speaking on the newspaper's podcast, "The Daily," says former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer turned off the cameras during press briefings because he was tired of Donald Trump criticizing him.

Via DeathAndTaxes:

“A lot of us assume, and I think the punditocracy assumed, this was an assault on broadcast journalism,” Thrush said in the podcast. “In fact, most of it was Spicer not wanting to be on camera so Donald Trump would not yell at him.”

Trump generally thought Spicer was not tough enough at his job, and that he made a bunch of missteps, including favorably comparing Hitler to Assad, which even Trump thought was too far, Thrush said.

The host of the podcast asked Thrush to clarify: “He didn’t want the president of the United States, his boss, to see him conducting the business of being press secretary?”

“Exactly,” Thrush responded. “The principled prime mover of that decision amounted to Sean Spicer not wanting his boss watching him work. That is a fact.”

The Daily Show Presents "Sean Spicer's Greatest Hits"

Sean Spicer during White House press briefing
Wow, that was fast.

Take a look at this compilation by The Daily Show of former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicers "greatest hits" following his resignation today.

The clips include his assertions that Trump's inauguration had the largest number of viewers, and that Hitler never used chemical weapons.

For his part, Spicer tweeted out this after his resignation:

Sean Spicer Resigns As White House Press Secretary

Sean Spicer

White House press secretary Sean Spicer has resigned from his position in the Trump administration over the hiring of New York financier Anthony Scaramucci as communications director.

From the New York Times:
Mr. Trump offered Mr. Scaramucci the job at 10 a.m. The president requested that Mr. Spicer stay on, but Mr. Spicer told Mr. Trump that he believed the appointment was a major mistake, according to person with direct knowledge of the exchange.

Mr. Trump made the appointment over the objection of Mr. Priebus, who thought Mr. Scaramucci lacked the requisite organizational or political experience. But the president believed Mr. Scaramucci, a ferocious defender of Mr. Trump’s on cable television, was best equipped to play the same role in-house, and he offered him a role with far-reaching powers independent of Mr. Priebus’s.

Mr. Spicer flatly rejected the president’s offer of a position subordinate to Mr. Scaramucci, according to two administration officials familiar with the exchange.

The appointment of Mr. Scaramucci, a favorite of Mr. Trump’s earliest campaign supporters, was backed by the president’s daughter Ivanka, his son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, the officials said.

Also from The Daily Beast:

Spicer was not the only one opposed to Scaramucci’s hiring. His deputy, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, was as well. So, too, was chief of staff Reince Priebus and chief strategist Steve Bannon, who vocally opposed Trump’s decision, two senior Trump administration officials told The Daily Beast.

According to three senior officials with knowledge of the situation, they and other top aides worried that the Scaramucci hiring would perpetuate the notion of “amateur hour” in the West Wing. White House officials who opposed Scaramucci’s planned rise in Trump’s ranks have referred to the incoming new addition as a “joke” and as a Trump-world “hanger-on” who isn’t qualified for the job and is unprepared to handle the near-constant communications crisis dogging President Trump, senior White House aides noted.

June 23 was the last time Spicer handled an on-camera daily briefing.

CBS News' Major Garrett reports that Spicer's exit raises questions about the security of Priebus' job.

• Virulently anti-LGBT activist Tony Perkins does NOT appreciate the irony that Rep. Steve Scalise, who has attended white nationalist events in the past, was saved at last week's DC shooting by a married, black lesbian.

• Ryan Phillippe reflects on playing the first openly gay teenager on TV: “There had never been a gay teenager represented on television up until that point: It’s before Will & Grace, it’s before Ellen came out, it’s before any of that stuff. I remember the fan mail that we would get, my mother and I would get, from gay teenagers or from parents of gay teenagers who found a way in to relate to or talk to their child through the show. Entertainment media can do those things, it can make people think differently or see a different side of something and I do remember and appreciating that — even back then when I was only a teenager myself. But in terms of like the larger view, I didn’t have a full understanding of how important it could have been, but I’m proud to have done it, I’m proud that that’s something I can say was a part of my career.”

• Asked why White House press briefings are becoming less frequent and off-camera, Trump advisor Steve Bannon replied to The Atlantic, "Sean (Spicer) got fatter."

CNN's Jim Acosta: White House Spokesman Sean Spicer Is "Kind Of Useless"

CNN's Jim Acosta is pretty much DONE with the lack of communication coming out of the White House these days.

Today saw the White House daily press briefing devolve into an off-the-air, no cameras, no audio recording "gaggle" where Spicer basically offered no answers to questions asked by the White House press corp.

“The White House press secretary is getting to a point, Brooke, where he’s just kind of useless,” Acosta told CNN's Brooke Baldwin. “You know, if he can’t come out and answer the questions and they’re not going to do this on camera or audio…why are we having these briefings or gaggles in the first place?”

According to Politico, Spicer is pushing to move into a new position that would oversee communications for the entire White House, advocating for a new press secretary to take his place. Fox News personality Laura Ingraham has apparently met with the powers that be in the Trump administration about the position.

The president hasn't held a true press conference since February.

Watch Acosta's justified frustrations below.

Sean Spicer Benched From White House Press Briefing

You can only guess that President Trump has lost faith in the answers and optics of Sean Spicer handling questions at the podium of White House press briefings.

National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster held today's on-camera press briefing at 11:30 AM, while Spicer will reportedly hold an off-camera briefing at 2PM with the White House press pool.

Last night, McMaster denounced the Washington Post's report that President Donald Trump revealed highly classified intelligence with Russian officials last week in the Oval Office.

Today, McMaster told the White House press pool that the conversation with the Russian Foreign Minister and Ambassador was "wholly appropriate," even though President Trump didn't even know where the information he shared came from.

Before that, however, Trump threw his national security team under the bus by tweeting he did indeed share the intel with Russia, adding he has the "absolute right" to do so.

According to Buzzfeed reporter Adrian Carrasquillo, White House staffers turned the TVs in the West Wing up to drown out the back-and-forth of a closed door meeting where Team Trump attempted to figure their way out of this latest misstep.

"Sean Spicer" And "Donald Trump" Make Out In SNL Sketch

Melissa McCarthy as "Sean Spicer" and Alec Baldwin as "Donald Trump"

With Melissa McCarthy returning to Saturday Night Live for her 5th appearance as host, fans immediately hoped for a reprisal of her wild and wacky version of White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer.

Not only did SNL deliver more "Spicey" Spicer, but we got a double-team with Alec Baldwin's "President Trump."

In the skit, an embattled "Spicer" returns to the press podium at the White House to explain that Trump had nothing to do with Russian interference during the 2016 election.

“Let me just put this whole Russian thing to bed once and for all: Trump is innocent. How do we know? Because he told us so. Period. Then he hired lawyers to agree with him. And they’re gonna prove it with a certified letter which you know is the truth because it costs an extra $2 to have it certified.”

But "Spicey" is quickly informed by White House press correspondents that Trump is prepping to replace him with press side-kick Sarah Huckabee.

Immediately hitting the road (via his podium), the press secretary sets out to find his boss and directly ask about the possible firing.

But Baldwin's Trump demures, “Sean, come on, I would never do that. She doesn’t have your special spice—salt and pepper, a little bit of sugar." Then, switching gears, Trump pleads, “Sean, kiss me.”

“No, I’m married,” Spicer argues. “I can’t, I have a wife, I took vows!”

“I’m famous, it’s okay,” Trump says.

I'm amazed the Trumpster hasn't issued one of his Twitter rants yet.

NY Times: Possible White House Shakeup In The Works

President Trump

The New York Times reports that a major shakeup could be in the works for the Trump administration.

Mr. Trump is growing increasingly dissatisfied with the performance of his chief of staff, Reince Priebus; the communications director, Michael Dubke; and Mr. Spicer, a Priebus ally, according to a half-dozen West Wing officials who said the president was considering the most far-reaching shake-up of his already tumultuous term.

He has been especially critical of Mr. Spicer, they said, openly musing about replacing him and telling people in his circle that he kept his own press secretary out of the loop in dismissing Mr. Comey until the last possible moment because he feared that the communications staff would leak the news.

Mr. Spicer’s blustery style mimics Mr. Trump’s, but people close to both men said he has not developed an especially close relationship with the president and has failed to use the self-protective tools that savvier Trump aides have adopted.

That seems to be changing. On Friday, Mr. Spicer prefaced much of what he said at the daily briefing with, “The president’s statement.” And while Mr. Trump has raised the Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle to allies as a possible press secretary, he has spent several hours with Mr. Spicer this week, praising his television “ratings” during the briefings.

Sparky Spicer: Syria's Bashar Al-Assad Is Worse Than Hitler

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, during a press briefing, told reporters that Syria's Bashar al-Assad is worse than Hilter, because even Hitler didn't use chemical weapons on his own people.

Hello? Gas chambers???

Via the New York Daily News:

“We didn’t use chemical weapons in WWII. We had someone as despicable as Hitler who didn’t even sink to using chemical weapons,” Spicer declared as he attacked Russia for backing Bashar Assad’s brutal regime in Syria.

He dug himself deeper when offered a chance to clarify a few minutes later. “When you come to sarin gas, he was not using the gas on his own people the same way that Assad is doing,” he said to shock in the White House briefing room. Hitler infamously used hydrogen cyanide known as Zyklon B at Nazi death camps targeting Jewish and other people.

You know, maybe this isn't the best job for Sparky Spicer. Maybe some kind of desk job where you don't put your foot in your mouth in front of millions of people...?

If you have to clarify your comment about Hitler, you probably shouldn't have said it from the get-go.

p.s. Happy Passover from the White House

Trump Officially Backpedals On "Wire Tapping," Meant "Surveillance"

At a heated White House press briefing, Sean Spicer had a near melt-down over what he feels is "unfair" coverage of President Trump's assertion that President Obama personally ordered a wire tap on Trump's phones in Trump Tower.

Spicer attempted to distort the bipartisan statement issued today by the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Senate Intelligence committee which read, "Based on the information available to us, we see no indications that Trump Tower was the subject of surveillance by any element of the United States government either before or after Election Day 2016."

So, to be clear, both the Senate and House Intelligence committees have announced they see no evidence of any surveillance by the U.S. of Donald Trump.

As expected, Spicer finally began backpedaling by saying what Trump meant when he tweeted "wire tapp" was "surveillance."

To be exact, in two separate tweets Trump specifically said "tapping my phones:"

White House Press Secretary Holds "Invite Only" Press Gaggle With Select Media Outlets

Sean Spicer

Several White House reporters were surprised and outraged today as White House press secretary Sean Spicer chose to hold a private press gaggle in his office inviting "friendly" media outlets but blocking several that President Trump has publicly deemed as having less-than-favorable reports on his administration.

From The Hill:

Spicer decided to hold an off-camera “gaggle” with reporters inside his West Wing office instead of the traditional on-camera briefing in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room.

Among the outlets not permitted to cover the gaggle were news organizations that President Trump has singled out for criticism, including CNN.

The New York Times, The Hill, Politico, BuzzFeed, the Daily Mail, BBC, the Los Angeles Times and the New York Daily News were among the other news organizations not permitted to attend.

Several right-leaning outlets were allowed into Spicer’s office, including Breitbart, the Washington Times and One America News Network.

A number of major news organizations were also let in to cover the gaggle. That group included ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, Reuters and Bloomberg.

The White House Correspondents’ Association sharply criticized the decision.

“The WHCA board is protesting strongly against how today's gaggle is being handled by the White House,” Jeff Mason, the association’s president, said in a statement.

“We encourage the organizations that were allowed in to share the material with others in the press corps who were not,” he added. “The board will be discussing this further with White House staff.”

A White House spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.

The "invitation only" presser drew quick rebuke from journalists.

From the New York Times:

“Nothing like this has ever happened at the White House in our long history of covering multiple administrations of different parties,” Dean Baquet, the executive editor of The Times, said in a statement. “We strongly protest the exclusion of The New York Times and the other news organizations. Free media access to a transparent government is obviously of crucial national interest.”

SNL Cold Open: Melissa McCarthy Kills Again As "Sean Spicer"

Melissa McCarthy killed it again last night on Saturday Night Live as White House press secretary "Sean Spicer" in the cold open.

I won't spoil any of the jokes for you. Just watch :)

It's interesting to me that President Trump, who we've heard was not amused by the impersonation last week by McCarthy, hasn't chimed in via Twitter yet.
