Gallup: Trump Lags Behind Modern Presidents In Approval

Gallup polling shows Donald Trump lags behind most other modern presidents in terms of approval ratings.

The approval ratings reported here are based on Gallup Daily tracking averages for President Donald Trump in 2017 and 2018, and periodic multi-day polls for Trump starting in 2019.

As you can see from the graphic below via Gallup, Trump's current approval stands at 43 percent.

His highest rating to date in the Gallup poll was 46 percent in April, and his lowest was 35 percent in December 2017.

Compared with previous presidents at this point in their presidency, though, Trump lags behind just about every modern president except Jimmy Carter who was mired in the Iran hostage crisis and a terrible economy.

Barack Obama garnered 46 percent approval at this point; George W scored 63 percent; Bill Clinton, even with impeachment looming, had 47 percent approval.

Gallup: Trump Job Approval By State

From Gallup:

The 17 states where Trump's approval meets or exceeds 50% account for a combined total of 102 electoral votes.

In contrast, the states in which Trump has an approval rating below 40% account for 201 electoral votes.

Job approval was below 40% in 16 states, 50% or higher in 17 states

Highest approval rating in West Virginia (62%), Wyoming (61%)

Lowest job approval in Hawaii (26%), Vermont (28%)

Gallup: Donald Trump's Approval Rating Sinks To 37%

The latest polling from Gallup shows Donald Trump's approval rating has dropped to a dismal 37%.

Those who disapprove of the job Trump is doing has risen to 59%.

According to CNBC political reporter John Harwood, Trump is the only president in the history of polling never to reach 50% approval in their first 2 years.

Additionally, Trump is the only president whose average approval for first 2 years (39%) was below 40%.

Harwood reports the averages for the Donald's predecessors as: Barack Obama 52%, George W. Bush 70%, Bill Clinton 48%, George H.W. Bush 70%, Ronald Reagan 50%, and Jimmy Carter 54%.

Donald Trump's Disapproval Rating Jumps To 60%

Donald Trump's approval rating drops again, this time to a low 38% according to the Gallup tracking poll.

Worse, though, is his disapproval rating that jumped up to his high of 60%.

Gallup tracks daily the percentage of Americans who approve or disapprove of the job Donald Trump is doing as president. Weekly results are based on telephone interviews with approximately 1,500 national adults, with a margin of error is ±3 percentage points.

Donald Trump's approval rating took a quick 4-point drop according to the Gallup tracking poll.

Not sure whether it was the Trumpster's woeful handling of the MAGAbomber where he bemoaned the 'bomb stuff' slowed down GOP voting, or if it was his tweeting about the World Series just hours after a mad Neo-Nazi interrupted a religious ceremony at a Pittsburgh synagogue and killed 11 people.

The last time Trump's numbers dropped so sharply was this summer as border patrol officers were removing small children from their parents.

Pride In Being American Drops To Record Low

According to Gallup, patriotism among Americans has dropped to its lowest level in the 18 years the polling company has been tracking the issue.

This Fourth of July marks a low point in U.S. patriotism. For the first time in Gallup’s 18-year history asking U.S. adults how proud they are to be Americans, fewer than a majority say they are “extremely proud.” Currently, 47% describe themselves this way, down from 51% in 2017 and well below the peak of 70% in 2003.

The latest results are based on a June 1-13 poll. When Gallup first asked the question in 2001, 55% of Americans said they were extremely proud. After the 9/11 terror attacks caused the public to rally around the nation and its leaders, the percentage expressing extreme pride in the country increased to 65%, and went up further to 70% less than two years later.

By 2005, about the time George W. Bush was set to begin his second term in office and the U.S. was going on its second year of military involvement in Iraq, the percentage extremely proud to be Americans fell to 61%. It held in the high 50% range between 2006 and 2013, but has fallen at least marginally each year since 2015, about the time the 2016 presidential campaign was getting underway.

Now, let's see, what has happened since 2016? Let me think...

Gallup: 67% Of Americans Support Marriage Equality

This year's Values & Morals poll from Gallup shows 67% of Americans support same-sex marriage today.

That's the highest level of support Gallup has recorded since the polling firm began asking Americans about their views on the issue in 1996. 

Back then, a mere 27% of those polled supported gay marriage.

It will come as no surprise that politically speaking there's a wide chasm between Democrats and Republicans on the subject.

The recent data shows that 83% of those who identify as Democrats said they support legally recognized same-sex marriage; only 44% of Republican respondents say they support marriage equality.

And those all-important Independent voters? A healthy 71% of independents said they were in favor of legally recognised same-sex marriage.

One reason for the increase in support could be from visibility: according to Gallup, one in 10 LGBTQ+ adults were married to a same-sex partner in 2017.

“This means that Americans are more likely to know someone who has married a same-sex partner, and the visibility of these marriages may be playing a role in overturning some folks’ previously held opposition to their legal status,” Gallup said.

Same-sex marriage became legal in all 50 states in the U.S. in June of 2015 following the historic Obergefell ruling by the Supreme Court.

It's not a good day in Trump Land.

In addition to three Donald Trump advisers being indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, and Trump's proposed ban on transgender military service members being blocked by a federal judge, there's more bad news for the Trumpster as the Gallup Tracking poll shows the president has hit a historic low in his approval rating in the poll.

Today's results show Trump at a dismal 33% approval rating; his disapproval rating has shot up to 62%.

So. Much. Winning.

On this day in 2009, President Obama's first year in the White House, his approval rating was 55% with only 40% disapproval.

But by September 27 he had dropped to 36% approval with 59% disapproval.

The Gallup Daily Tracking poll shows Donald Trump has hit a milestone in his approval rating, but not the kind any president would like to have.

The poll shows the Trumpster returning to his record-low approval rating - 34% - and a record-high disapproval rating of 61%.

Gallup's daily tracking poll shows Donald Trump's Approval rating has dropped again to near his lowest point.

Sitting at 36% today, the only time he's shown worse numbers was on March 28 when he hit a dismal 35% approval rating.

His disapproval numbers hit a high of 60% last month on June 12. He currently shows a 59% disapproval rating.

Gallup: Support For Marriage Equality Continues To Rise

Americans' support for same-sex marriage has more than doubled since Gallup first polled on the issue in 1996, when 27% said it should be recognized as valid by the law.

In 2004 -- weeks before gay weddings took place in Massachusetts after it became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage -- less than half of Americans (42%) felt such unions should be legally valid.

Majority support for gay marriage would not come until May 2011, about a month before New York became the sixth state to legalize it.

Since then, support for legal same-sex marriage has steadily climbed, with consistent majorities in favor of it since late 2012.

Gallup also reports that support for same-sex relations has also reached an all-time high of 72%.

When Gallup first began polling on the issue in 1977, only 43% said same-sex relations should be legal.

Trump's Approval Rating Drops (Again)

President Trump's approval ratings continue downward - 38% approval today - in the aftermath of the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

His recent "ceiling" seems to be around 43% approval these days.

He earned 46% of the voting electorate back in November, but hasn't seen 46% approval since the week he was sworn into office.

More bad news for President Trump as Gallup Polling shows the opinion of American voters continues to slide downward on key characteristics of the Trumpster:

President Donald Trump's image among Americans as someone who keeps his promises has faded in the first two months of his presidency, falling from 62% in February to 45%. The public is also less likely to see him as a "strong and decisive leader," as someone who "can bring about the changes this country needs" or as "honest and trustworthy."

With close to two-thirds of Americans saying in February that Trump "keeps his promises," it was clearly a strength for the president. Given the sharp decline on that dimension this month, that is no longer the case. In February, a majority also said Trump can bring about the changes the country needs, but less than half hold that view now.

It's notable that only 36% of those polled think Trump is "honest and trustworthy."

Gallup: 55% Of Americans Disapprove Of Job Trump Is Doing

According to Gallup Polls, President Trump has slid to a -15 job approval rating (40% approve, 55% disapprove).

Is this the "winning" he kept telling us about during the campaign?

States With The Most (and Least) Self-Identified LGBTs

After interviewing almost 500,000 randomly selected adults in the U.S., a new Gallup survey finds the state with the highest percentage of self-identified LGBTs was Vermont with 5.3% of its citizens identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

5.3% - Vermont
4.9% - Massachusetts, California and Oregon
4.8% - Nevada

The District of Columbia (obviously not a state) had the highest population of LGBTs with 8.6%.

Which states have the smallest populations of LGBTs?

2% - South Dakota
2.7% - North Dakota
2.8% - Idaho
3% - South Carolina, Montana

Interesting to note: other than Nevada, the areas with the highest number of LGBTs tend to be coastal states. Those states with the lowest numbers tend to be in midwestern and southern states.

These figures indicate a rise in the nationwide LGBT population from 3.5% in 2012 to 4.1% in 2016.

Gallup believes that social acceptance is the leading factor to more Americans being willing to be open about their sexuality. The vast majority of increases in these numbers come from millennials.
