News Round-Up: January 9, 2019

Some news items you might have missed:

• Just as Colorado has sworn in Jared Polis as the first openly gay governor of a state, the Denver city council voted unanimously on Monday to ban so-called 'conversion therapy' for minors.

• Actor Timothée Chalamet has added to his growing reputation as an LGBTQ fan favorite by giving $1,000 to New York’s LGBT Community Center live on the Golden Globes red carpet.

• Thanks to the Trump shutdown, the FDA has stopped most food safety inspections. Feel safer?

• The Coast Guard Support Program has issued a five-page tip sheet on how to financially cope with a long U.S. government shutdown. The suggestions include: consider holding a garage sale, babysitting, dog-walking or serving as a “mystery shopper.”

• North Carolina just lost more revenue thanks to its anti-LGBTQ laws. Netflix has nixed the idea of shooting a new series, titled OBX, in the state. The production is expected to spend $60 million in whatever state Netflix eventually chooses.

• It may be hump day, but chill a bit with the latest single from VanJess, "Another Lover."

I like the ebb and flow of the song, as well as the video's visual change-ups from choreography to minimalist trance vibe.

Timothée Chalamet stars in the upcoming Oscar contender, 'Beautiful Boy'

Fresh off his spectacular Oscar-nominated turn in the acclaimed gay-centric film, Call Me By Your Name, Timothée Chalamet stars with fellow Academy Award nominees Steve Carell and Amy Ryan in Beautiful Boy, due to hit theaters October 12.

The film is based on a pair of best-selling memoirs by father and son David and Nic Sheff.

The official logline reads, “Based on the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son & David and Nic Sheff, Beautiful Boy chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse, and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years.”

The trailer begins with a fairly extended scene between father and son, an unusual move for an initial promo but puts the talent and chemistry of Chalamet and Carell front and center. Both are here, and both are bringing it.

From the Academy Award winning producers of 12 Years A Slave and Moonlight, the film also features Golden Globe winner Maura Tierney.

Considering the depth of talent involved with the film, Oscar prognosticators already have the movie on their radar.

• I'm still jazzed about 2016 Summer Olympic sensation Pita Taufatofua (above) becoming a cross-country skier heading to the 2018 Winter Olympics in only a year.

• A young gay came out to his mother in Mississippi last week. But when the mother didn't know how best to respond, she wisely called a gay bar looking for advice :)

• The Twitterverse is not happy seeing Timothée Chalamet lose the Golden Globe and SAG Awards for his acclaimed performance in Call Me By Your Name to Gary Oldman.

• Porn actor Tegan Zayne tweets that two summers ago his co-star, Topher DiMaggio, forced him to have sex the night before shooting a scene. Zayne also alleges DiMaggio demeaned and degraded him during the video shoot calling him "a girl." DiMaggio denies the allegations.

• Back2Stonewall reports on anti-LGBT banners outside a gay-friendly church near Indianapolis. The banner read, "Die Faggots Just Like Orlando and Las Vegas." #HowCharming

• According to Fox News host Howard Kurtz's new book, Media Madness: Donald Trump, The Press, And The War Over The Truth, Donald Trump secretly admitted he was wrong to have former White House press secretary Sean Spicer exaggerate the size of the crowd attending his inauguration.

• Gus Kenworthy and Adam Rippon aren't the only gay athletes heading to the Winter Olympic Games. Check out these three queer women - Cheryl Maas, Ireen Wüst, and Belle Brockhoff - going for the gold in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

ELLEN: "Call Me By Your Name" Stars Share Backstory Of Their First Kiss

Call Me by Your Name stars Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet sat down with Ellen DeGeneres today sharing behind-the-scenes stories of making the award-winning film including their first rehearsal which apparently consisted of rolling around in the grass making out.

Chalamet also noted the new-found dangers of "razor burn" making out with the handsome Hammer.

"That's a real thing that people deal with," shared Chalamet.

Ellen concurred, "Oh yes. Yes. I don't anymore, but I did...."

Hilarity ensues.

The two actors clearly have great chemistry together. Can't wait to see the film.
