Happy Birthday Colin!

Colin, a young boy from Kalamazoo, who is about to turn 11 is in for a BIG surprise on his birthday.

When his mom asked him what he would like to do for his birthday, he said he didn't want a party because "he has no friends."

Colin was diagnosed with a disorder similar to autism about a year ago, she told WOOD TV. Because of it, he has difficulty socializing.

So what does a mother do?  THIS mother made a plan to surprise her son with more than just a "party."  He's about to get a huge on March 9th - his eleventh birthday.

His mother created this Facebook page asking folks to help make her son feel special on his birthday.

With a little help from Ellen, the page now has over 1.3 million "Likes".

Here's her message to the Facebook world:

I am Colin's mom.

I created this page for my amazing, wonderful, challenging son who is about to turn 11 on March 9th.

Because of Colin's disabilities, social skills are not easy for him, and he often acts out in school, and the other kids don't like him.

So when I asked him if he wanted a party for his birthday, he said there wasn't a point because he has no friends.

He eats lunch alone in the office everyday because no one will let him sit with them, and rather than force someone to be unhappy with his presence, he sits alone in the office.

So I thought, if I could create a page where people could send him positive thoughts and encouraging words, that would be better than any birthday party.

I remember what it was like to not always have someone to sit with at lunch during school.  It's not much fun.

And my brother is mildly autistic and has always had to cope with some folks who didn't really "get" him.  But that's really THEM, not him.  I think he rocks.

Here's my special birthday wish for Colin, featuring MY best friends who sit with me everyday at lunch.  I'm not much of a singer, but my friends are :)

Colin - my wish is that you have friends like Bruno and company to have lunch with who like you for who you are.
