Billy Porter: 'Sing As Loud And High As You Can Until You Can Get Out'

Billy Porter

Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Billy Porter has come to be seen as almost larger than life when you consider his passionate performances in the acclaimed FX series, POSE, as well as his bold and unabashed fashion choices which have earned him the title of ‘Red Carpet Ninja.’

But in a recent interview with veteran journalist Katie Couric for her ‘In My Orbit’ video series, Porter offers candid, personal insights into how he came to view his talent and how it could save him during a difficult childhood.

Surrounded by several of the outfits he’s made famous at Christian Siriano's The Curated NYC, Porter explains that it was ultimately his voice that helped him find acceptance within his own family.

“I understood that the talent that I have is not what everybody gets,” shared the Tony Award winner without ego.

“When I sang, the people around me behaved differently,” said Porter. “You know, my family wasn’t scared of my sissiness anymore when I sang. That was the one thing that kept them comforted - was when I could sing. So it became: ‘Well, just sing as loud as you can and as high as you can for as long as you can until you can get out.’”

“And I did,” added Porter.

Upon moving to New York City after training at Carnegie Mellon University, one of the leading theater schools in the country, Porter already knew his plan: “I would play my trump card, which was this crazy voice. And then once I got in, and started working, then an expansioncould happen and I could show the rest of myself.”

But that’s not what happened. Instead, Porter found himself pigeon-holed as the ‘sassy, Black, queeny, flamboyant clown.’

But then he saw Jeffrey Wright as “Belize” in the original Broadway cast of the ground-breaking Angels In America, and he suddenly saw a space for himself.

“For the first time, I saw a Black gay man who was not reviled and not just the comic relief,” shared Porter. “He was a human being, like a real human being.”

He would eventually play that role in the off-Broadway revival, but as he admits here, to shut down the ‘clown’ roles, he stopped working commercially for 13 years.

Then along came a little show named Kinky Boots. And a Tony Award for ‘Best Actor in a Musical.’

And then, Ryan Murphy and POSE, which Porter still seems to be wrapping his head around to this day.

“It blows my mind. There was no context to dream up a show like POSE; to dream up a character like ‘Pray Tell.’ There was no space for that,” he tells Couric. “That’s what Ryan Murphy and this situation has allowed for me to understand how to do - is dream the impossible. There are no limits.”

Bringing up his recent star turns on the awards show red carpets, Porter's enthusiasm is evident.

“I’ve always loved the red carpet, I’ve always loved fashion,” gushes the vibrant actor. “I have always been a fashion person, and if you talk to anyone who’s known me for years, they’re like, ‘Duh!’”

I can attest the fashion love and the effusive personality we see in this interview is exactly the Billy Porter I've known since the early 1990s.

“In the quiet moments, I find the tears streaming down my face. The gratitude, the joy. Like, I lived long enough to see this day,” he admits quietly.

What's next for Porter?

"I want to be Oprah. I want to be Beyonce. I want to be the one writing the checks. I want to be the one telling myself 'Yes.' That's next."

It’s a great interview. Hit play below.

Out Music: Sons Of An Illustrious Father "Don't Cha"

Sons of an Illustrious Father

Out actor Ezra Miller and his band, Sons of an Illustrious Father, were recently out at a sexy, queer party in Nashville while on tour. As the story goes, heterosexual folks started dropping by the shindig as it was the coolest thing in town that night.

Miller's band mate, Lilah Larson, says the straight folks "were sort of uncomfortably ogling the frolicking queers — including us — in a way that belied their envy and lust."

But when the Pussycat Dolls' hit, "Don't Cha," came up in the music cue, the band realized they needed to cover the track, from their own perspective, as a way to "encapsulate this common experience.”

Wearing black leotards, dancing to a slowed, time-warped version of the song, the music video is an animal all unto its own.

At first, I didn't know what to think.

I still don't - but I watched.

Gus Kenworthy, out Olympic skier and all-around hottie, has been cast in one of my favorite shows and I am shook!

Hollywood super-producer Ryan Murphy broke the news this morning on Instagram (cause that’s how news happens these days) that gorgeous Gus has been cast in the next installment of American Horror Story.

The social media post featured a pic of a grinning Gus with the caption, “That special moment when you realize you have an Olympic medal AND will be playing Emma Roberts’ boyfriend on ‘American Horror Story’ Season 9.”

Gus replied to the post with a giant “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.”

AHS alum Colton Haynes chimed in writing, “Ahhhhhh, so happy for u @guskenworthy!!! Ur gonna be soooo amazing and so happy ur finally getting into acting!!!”

Over on his own Instagram, Gus shared Murphy’s post writing, “I guess the cat's out of the bag... I'm So F*cking Shook ILYSM @mrrmurphy” complete with applause, crying and love-struck emojis.

Out actor Charlie Carver (Teen Wolf, Boys in the Band) blessed the “Awesomeness” news , and YouTuber Max Emerson threw in a “Whoah!”

In fact, the comments on Gus’s post turned into a “who’s who” of gay Instagram including Eliad Cohen, Justin & Nick, Adam Rippon, Andy Mientus,

Gus, who won a silver medal in the men’s Slopestyle at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, told Variety last year that acting has been his dream since childhood.

He’s dabbled a bit up to now making his TV acting debut in a 2016 episode of ABC’s The Real O’Neals. He also had a cameo moment in the cult TV hit, Sharknado 5: Global Swarming.

But for the most part, Gus has let his longtime boyfriend, Matthew Wilkas (Gayby, Eastsiders), be the actor of the couple.

CBS has announced The Big Bang Theory, arguably one of the most successful sitcoms in television history, will come to a close at the end of the upcoming 12th season.
The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons
CBS has announced The Big Bang Theory, arguably one of the most successful sitcoms in television history, will come to a close at the end of the upcoming 12th season.

The reason for the series ending, according to Entertainment Weekly, is out actor Jim Parsons felt he was ready to walk away from the sitcom.

To date, the series has not only brought Parsons immense fame but 4 Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe award, starring roles on Broadway (The Normal Heart, The Boys in the Band) and in films (A Boy Like Jake, Hidden Figures).

Additionally, as the series’ neurotic “Dr. Sheldon Cooper,” Parsons has become the highest paid actor on television earning, along with his costars Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Kunal Nayyar, and Simon Helberg, about $1 million per episode.

EW reports that had he stayed for the two years CBS was negotiating, he stood to earn more than $50 million.

“We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past 12 seasons,” read a joint statement by Warner Bros. Television, CBS and Chuck Lorre Productions. “We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.”

According to reports, Parsons will continue to do voiceover work for the prequel series to TBBT, The Young Sheldon.

Although he never officially came out, Parsons has remarked in interviews that he was “delighted” when the New York Times outed the actor by casually writing “Mr. Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship” near the end of a profile in 2012.

He married his longtime boyfriend, Todd Spiewak, last year in New York City.

The final season of The Big Bang Theory premieres on September 24.

New NBC Series "Champions" Features 16-Year-Old Out Actor J.J. Totah

Andy Favreau as Matthew, J.J. Totah as Michael, Anders Holm as Vince

Mindy Kaling and her co-producer Charlie Grandy (The Mindy Project; The Office) will see the premiere of their latest TV series, Champions, debut this Thursday night on NBC.

In the show, Brooklyn gym owner Vince (Anders Holm) sees his swinging bachelor life come to a halt when an old high-school fling, Priya (played by Kaling in a guest appearance) arrives from Cleveland with Michael, the 15-year-old son he’s never met.

Michael (played by out actor J.J. Totah) has always dreamed of living in New York City and attending its famed performing arts high school; and mother Priya has no issue getting dad Vince and his not-so-bright bro, Matthew (Andy Favreau) to take over the parenting duties in making Michael's dream a reality.

“Mindy wanted to tell a fresh New York story,” Grandy told TV Insider. “So we came up with a gay, half-Indian teen from the Midwest.”

In addition to his breakout performance in Other People, you may remember the 16-year-old actor from appearances on Glee, 2 Broke Girls, Sophia The First, and in the super-hero flick Spider-Man: Homecoming.

"MASH" & "Beauty And The Beast" Star David Ogden Stiers Passes Away At 75

David Ogden Stiers
David Ogden Stiers, famous for his role as the loveably arrogant "Maj. Charles Winchester" on the hit television show MASH, has passed away at the age of 75.

His agent, Mitchell K. Stubbs, shared that the versatile actor passed after a "courageous battle" with bladder cancer.

His work on MASH earned him two Emmy nominations, and he garnered a third for the NBC mini-series The First Olympics: Athens 1896.

Stiers also enjoyed great success in voiceover work, most famously lending his talents to the blockbuster Disney film Beauty And The Beast where he voiced the role of "Cogsworth." Other notable voiceover work included The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Pocahontas.

He was no stranger to Broadway either having made his debut on the Great White Way in The Three Sisters in 1974. He returned to the Broadway stage many times in productions including The Magic Show and Irving Berlin's White Christmas.

Stiers came out as gay in 2009 during an interview with a gay publication in Oklahoma.

“I am [gay],” Ogden Stiers said. “Very proud to be so.” Like many actors, his coming out happened later in life as he feared backlash for his career.

But he added, "I wish to spend my life's twilight being just who I am."

I could post dozens of MASH moments from Stiers' career, but Ryan Shea at Instinct reminds us of an appearance on Frasier back in May of 2003 where Stiers played a character much like "Frasier Crane" but later in the episode came out as gay with deft poignancy.

RIP David Ogden Stiers.

Russell Tovey & Wentworth Miller Deliver Same-Sex "Super-Kiss" In Primetime

Wentworth Miller (L) and Russell Tovey (R)

Being the comic book geek that I am, I caught up on The CW's "Crisis On Earth X" last night in one four-hour binge.

I loved it! So well done across all four CW shows - The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.

Plus, there were two (TWO!) same-sex relationships incorporated into the storylines.

First, we saw Supergirl's sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh) connecting with White Canary (Caity Lotz).

And, we were treated to two gay super-heroes kiss in primetime! And the heroes were played by two openly gay actors (Wentworth Miller, Russell Tovey).

Check out the liplock between Tovey and Miller below. And if you like the super-hero genre, use that On Demand thingy and watch "Crisis On Earth X."

Colton Haynes Calls Out 'F*cked Up' Hollywood Execs For Not Casting More Out Actors

Colton Haynes (image via Instagram)

Arrow/Teen Wolf star Colton Haynes went on an unexplained Twitter rant last night calling out Hollywood power peeps for not hiring more openly LGBT actors.

Haynes did, however, reserve praise for Hollywood execs Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story), Greg Berlanti (Arrow) and Jeff Davis (Teen Wolf) who have cast the handsome Haynes in his three most high-profile roles.

“Hollywood is so f**ked up. So much of the focus is on your personal life & has nothing to do with the talent you have to bring to the table.”

“Thank god for Ryan Murphy, Greg Berlanti, & Jeff Davis. They believe gay actors are more than just their personal lives.

“So disappointed in how Hollywood cant understand that playing a character has nothing to do with how u live your personal life.”

Haynes makes his return to Teen Wolf in the September 10 episode with fellow alum Charlie Carver as a hottie gay were-couple, and will also appear in the upcoming season of American Horror Story: Cult beginning September 5.

How To Get Away With Murder's Conrad Ricamora Honored By HRC With Visibility Award

This past Saturday, television and stage actor Conrad Ricamora (How To Get Away With Murder, The King & I) received the HRC Visibility Award at the 2016 Cleveland Gala.

Ricamora is a wonderful choice for this honor. He's been openly gay for years as he's been starring on the hit network television show "How To Get Away With Murder" at the same time he's been starring on Broadway in the recent sterling revival of The King & I.

Not only is Ricamora openly gay for some time now, he plays an openly gay character on HTGAWM who is also HIV+.

Watch his disarmingly charming acceptance speech below. He's especially effusive in praise for those out actors before him like Sean Hayes, George Takei and Sir Ian McKellen.

“I want to thank all of the out actors that have empowered other actors like me to live with integrity because there’s a lot of pressure to stay in the closet when you first start acting. There are some actors though who have chosen to live their lives with integrity, both personally and professionally.

"From George Takei to Sean Hayes, to Sir Ian McKellen to Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and countless, countless others, your honesty and your openness in your public lives allows kids like me from Niceville, Florida to see you on screen, or online, or in print and feel like there’s a place for us in the world, even when we’re scared for our own safety in the communities that we’re living.”

Matt Baume On Matt Damon's Statement That Actors Should Keep Sexuality Secret

Matt Damon, while promoting his new movie The Martian made mention to The Guardian of how he sees the effect of coming out on the careers of gay actors:
“I think it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly,” he continues. “But in terms of actors, I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you period. And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.”
Matt Baume has his own take on those comments:
Matt Damon told an interviewer this week that actors should keep their sexuality secret whether straight or gay, which is a little hypocritical considering he's an open book when it comes to his heterosexuality.

I don't think he's a homophobe, but imposing a double standard on gay actors is just wrong.

Out actor Chad Allen has spent his entire life in the public eye, having starred in My Two Dads and Our House; Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman; General Hospital: Night Shift, and films as Save Me.

As he looks to finishing a PhD in Psychology, the 40-year-old Chad has decided to take his life away from the spotlight:

Short Film: "Gay Men On Screen: A Place For Us"

In the span of five minutes, editor Manuel Betancourt explores the diversity and progress (or not) gays have made on the big and small screens.

From the editor:

How are gay men depicted in mainstream culture? From flaming sissies to AIDS victims, from sex-crazed lotharios to queer villains, the tropes that have thus far characterized gay men on screen have been few though they've increasingly become more varied, showcasing the diversity in our community.

Showcasing scenes from Angels in America, The Normal Heart, In & Out, Brokeback Mountain, as well as older films like The Maltese Falcon and Rope, this supercut compiles a representative sample of the ways gay men have been portrayed on screen.

Wentworth Miller to guest on new CW series The Flash as villain

Hunky and handsome Wentworth Miller has pretty much been AWOL from acting since the wrap of his four seasons of Prison Break in 2009.  Other than a couple of guest spots on shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and House MD, there's not been much opportunity to take in Miller's considerable talents on screen.

But now we get news that he will guest this coming fall on the new super-hero series The Flash as one of the Flash's biggest villains - Leonard Snart aka "Captain Cold."

From EW:

The freeze-gun-touting villain is one of Barry Allen/The Flash’s biggest adversaries in the DC Comics, and is the leader of the Rogues—a group of his enemies.

Miller will guest star as the character in the fourth episode of the show’s debut season this fall. “We’ll be seeing his origin and the origin of the Rogues,” said executive producer Greg Berlanti.

Since the end of Prison Break, Miller has focused on writing and penned the screenplay for the film Stoker which was released as a feature film.

Miller came out as gay last year.  In a recent interview he was quoted as saying, 'I was out to a handful of people in my twenties, and once I hit 30, I was out to family and friends. But professionally, I was feeding a fantasy. I created this air of "We don't address that thing."'
