Ken Cuccinelli, acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (and descendant of Irish/Italian immigrants) says the immigrant tradition that has made America great for centuries should be revised to welcome into the U.S. only those who can "stand on their own two feet."
Ken Cuccinelli tweaked the famous poem from Emma Lazarus -- whose words, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" are long associated with immigration to the US and the nation's history as a haven -- as part of a case for strict new measures pushed Monday by the Trump administration that could dramatically change the legal immigration system.
"Would you also agree that Emma Lazarus's words etched on the Statue of Liberty, 'Give me your tired, give me your poor,' are also a part of the American ethos?" NPR's Rachel Martin asked Cuccinelli on "Morning Edition" in an interview published Tuesday.
"They certainly are: 'Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge,'" he replied. "That plaque was put on the Statue of Liberty at almost the same time as the first public charge was passed -- very interesting timing."
On Monday, the Trump administration announced a regulation that makes it easier to reject green card and visa applications. The new rule means many green card and visa applicants could be turned down if they have low incomes or little education, and have used benefits such as most forms of Medicaid, food stamps, and housing vouchers, because they'd be deemed more likely to need government assistance in the future.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson told his TV audience last night that white supremacy is "actually not a real problem in America.”
“This is a hoax, just like the Russia hoax," he added. "It’s a conspiracy theory used to divide the country and keep a hold on power.”
Saying “the whole thing is a lie,” Carlson downplayed the threat by saying, "The combined membership of every white supremacist organization in this country would be able to fit inside a college football stadium.”
As CNN reports, the point is that men like the suspect in the El Paso shooting aren’t “members” of an “organization.”
The suspect made clear in the manifesto he left behind that he wanted to kill as many Mexicans as possible.

You may recall the sad tale of the 'smirking teen' who became the center of attention when he stood across from a Native American elder on the National Mall, appearing to block the elder's path.
The teen, Nick Sandmann, eventually filed a $250 million lawsuit against the Washington Post for defamation in regard to the newspaper's coverage of the incident.
Today, that lawsuit has been dismissed by a federal judge.
William Bertelsman, who heard oral arguments in the case earlier this month, issued the ruling on Friday.
Nick and his attorneys, Todd McMurtry and L. Lin Wood, alleged that the gist of The Washington Post's first article conveyed that Nick had assaulted or physically intimidated Nathan Phillips, engaged in racist conduct, and engaged in taunts.
But, Bertelsman wrote, "this is not supported by the plain language in the article, which states none of these things."
Bertelsman accepted Nick's assertion that he was only standing motionless across from Phillips, without ill intent.
"He concluded that he was being blocked and not allowed to retreat," Bertelsman wrote. "He passed these conclusions on to The Post. They may have been erroneous, but, as discussed above, they are opinion protected by the First Amendment."
Phillips and Nick were captured on videos that went viral in January when they stood across from each other on the National Mall. Nick stared at Phillips as Phillips participated in a song with other Native Americans.

A hack writer (using the term loosely here) somehow got a tacky, ill-written hatchet job on Democratic presidential candidate Mayor Pete Buttigieg on the New Republic website.
I won't link to it because it was yanked down once the writer, Dale Peck, was presumably tackled and handcuffed to a radiator somewhere.
The author, who's clearly a bitter old queen, took Mayor Pete to task for coming out in his mid-30s and claims that disqualifies him from the presidency.
When contacted about the article, editor Chris Lehmann (who must have been at happy hour when the author hacked into NR's website) responded saying, "The New Republic recognizes that this post crossed a line, and while it was largely intended as satire, it was inappropriate and invasive."

Wesly Michel was waiting for a friend at their apartment building in San Francisco on July 4, when he encountered a racist assh*le who decided he needed to call the police because Michel was, basically, 'waiting while black.'
Sadly, the son of the racist was with him at the time, and the son begged his father not to call the police or act out.
"Daddy, look what you've gotten us into. Let's go!"
Michel, a 35-year-old software engineer, told CNN, "Unfortunately this incident mirrors the experience that African Americans endure daily where we are questioned on whether we belong. I videotaped this incident to protect myself and to support my story should police get involved."
During the three-and-a-half-minute recording (which was posted to Michel's Facebook page), the boy can be heard pleading with his father not to call police on Michel, whom the father says is a "trespasser" in his building that he describes as "appears to be African-American."
Michel encountered the father and son on Independence Day as he says he was waiting on a friend at an apartment building in San Francisco. The video begins as the man asks Michel to identify the person he is there to see and to "please call your friend on the call box and have them come down and get you."
"They don't have to do that. You can just walk away," Michel responds.
The man, who appears to be holding open the door to the building during the conversation, tells Michel he's going to call the police.
"Daddy don't!" the child says as the man pulls out his cell phone.
Michel welcomes the call and reminds the man that he is being recorded.
"You're just gonna be the next person on TV, just remember that and you have your son with you," Michel tells the man.
The man calls the police and tells them that Michel is a "trespasser," who "tailgated" into the building, walking in as he was walking out.
As the man talks to police, his son begins pleading with him to leave and to not call police.
"Dad, don't. Please go," the boy says. "Daddy go. It's the better; I agree with him, daddy."
The boy begins to cry as his father describes Michel to police.
"Daddy, I don't like this. Let's go," he says.
"Listen to your son, walk away," Michel says. "I will stop this. I will stop the recording."
Of course, Michel's friend arrives (as the video is still recording) but there's no apology from assh*le man.
As the father smirks, his young son continues to beg his father. "Told you. Let's go now," pleads the young boy. "Daddy, look what you've gotten us into. Let's go!"
The police do not come to the scene. Assh*le man asks Michel to stop recording, but he continues anyway.
"Now you're online forever," says Michel.
My question is: if you truly think the man is trespassing and a danger, why are you continuing to stand within two feet of him with your VERY young son next to you???
Reading the comments on Michel's Facebook page, the vast majority note that the son had the good sense that the father did not. Many also pointed out how traumatized the child was, but assh*le man wouldn't relent even for his child.
Internet sleuths, including the folks at Essence, believe the man to be someone named Christopher Cukor. Several posters found his Linkedin profile as well as his Facebook page before the profile photo was changed.

The photos of the man do appear to be him, but I'm not out to dox anyone.
There is an interesting twist to the story.
IF the man is someone named Christopher Cukor, several people found an SF Gate news item from 2012 of a man named Peter Cukor, in the same area, who was killed by a black man after calling the police about a "strange man" on his property.
Peter Cukor had a son named Christopher Cukor, who would be about 44-years-old today.
That Christopher Cukor blamed the police for not responding to his father's call and eventually sued the police department. It appears from the police transcript of the call that the elder didn't communicate imminent danger. But when the black man returned, Cukor's wife called saying her husband was being attacked, and the police responded.
According to the SF Gate report, the suspect was found mentally incompetent to stand trial. He mentioned to police he was looking for his fiancée Zoey. The man's father told police his son didn't have a fiancée and Zoey was a figment of his imagination.
The attacker's family told authorities he had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia five years earlier and they had asked authorities to remove him from the streets while he was treated, reports SF Gate.
That is a sad story. But, I don't believe that justifies living the rest of your life assuming all black men pose violent danger to you.
Enjoying the attention of press and camera crews at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, Donald Trump was asked if he was going to warn Russian President Putin against meddling in U.S. elections.
“Yes, of course I will,” replied Trump.
Turning to Putin with a smirk, Trump said, “Don’t meddle in the election, President.” He also gestured to the Russian delegation repeating, “Don’t meddle in the election.”
They all thought it to be quite hilarious.
All U.S. intelligence agencies have agreed that Russian forces worked to influence the 2016 presidential election which delivered a surprise win to Trump.
Trump also joked with the Russian leader about what he calls 'fake news,' telling Putin, “Fake news is a great term, isn’t it? You don’t have this problem in Russia, but we do.”
“We also have,” replied Putin. “It’s the same.”

During an interview segment with George Stephanopolous of ABC News, Donald Trump stopped mid-sentence and asked for a 're-shoot' of his answer because his chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, coughed in the background.
As he was answering a question regarding his financial records, Trump stopped - as if on a television set.
“And let’s do that over, he’s coughing in the middle of my answer,” Trump told Stephanopoulos.
“I don’t like that, you know, I don’t like that,” Trump said in reference to the coughing, with clear disdain.
“Your chief of staff,” Stephanopoulos asked.
“If you’re going to cough, please leave the room," said Trump. "You just can’t, you just can’t cough. Boy oh boy..."
Even at the end of the interview, Trump revisited "the cough."

I haven't personally verified the identities of the two people chatting in exchange, so, feel free to believe or not believe.
In the screen captures, Schock complains of how "mean and nasty" the gays have been to him in leaking his nude pics.
He also says he "hadn't come to terms" with his sexuality when he cast anti-LGBTQ votes while in Congress, and was in the process of coming out to his family when video of him canoodling at Coachella surfaced.
In addition, the person says the 'hatred' aimed at him is based on his being a Republican.

NBC News reports that the Trump administration is rejecting requests from U.S. embassies to fly the rainbow pride flag on embassy flagpoles during LGBTQ Pride Month.
The U.S. embassies in Israel, Germany, Brazil and Latvia are among those that have requested permission from Trump's State Department to fly the pride flag on their flagpoles and have been denied, diplomats said.
Although the pride flag can and is being flown elsewhere on embassy grounds, including inside embassies and on exterior walls, the decision not to allow it on the official flagpole stands in contrast to President Donald Trump's claim to be a leader in supporting LGBTQ rights overseas.
Trump's administration has announced a campaign to decriminalize homosexuality overseas and this month issued a tweet and formal statement to "celebrate LGBT Pride Month and recognize the outstanding contributions LGBT people have made."
The denials to U.S. embassies have come from the office of the State Department's undersecretary for management, Brian Bulatao, a longtime associate of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who also worked for him at the CIA. Under State Department policy, embassies that want to fly the flag on their flagpoles are expected to obtain permission from Washington.
Fox News' Tucker Carlson did a pre-recorded interview with historian Rutger Bregman regarding taxation and wealth equality, but didn't like what he was hearing. So he cussed Bregman out, and never aired the interview.

Nathan Phillips, the 64-year-old Vietnam Veteran and Native American elder who found himself being mocked and taunted by a group of high school boys from Covington, Kentucky, shared his view of the appalling incident with The Washington Post.
Phillips, who was singing the American Indian Movement song that serves as a ceremony to send the spirits home, said he noticed tensions beginning to escalate when the teens and other apparent participants from the nearby March for Life rally began taunting the dispersing indigenous crowd.
A few people in the March for Life crowd began to chant, “Build that wall, build that wall,” he said.
“It was getting ugly, and I was thinking: ‘I’ve got to find myself an exit out of this situation and finish my song at the Lincoln Memorial,’ ” Phillips recalled. “I started going that way, and that guy in the hat stood in my way, and we were at an impasse. He just blocked my way and wouldn’t allow me to retreat.”
Phillips kept drumming and singing, thinking about his wife, Shoshana, who died of bone marrow cancer nearly four years ago, and the various threats that face indigenous communities around the world, he said.
“I felt like the spirit was talking through me,” Phillips said.
Defenders of the young boys shared on social media a video clip that appeared to show Phillips approaching the school group at one point.
They claimed Phillips was the instigator, but other witnesses say Phillips saw the teens taunting another group and was trying to peacefully defuse a situation before it escalated.

Chase Iron Eyes, an attorney with the Lakota People’s Law Project, said the incident lasted about 10 minutes and ended when Phillips and other activists walked away.
Phillips and the people involved in the Indigenous Peoples March had been using what he described as a “permitted space” near the Lincoln Memorial for hours. But as they were wrapping up, other people with opposing viewpoints — including some from the March for Life — had entered that permitted space and were making demonstrations of their own.
He told The Post that he hoped to get closer to the Lincoln Memorial to conclude the ceremony. That’s when he encountered the large group of boys.
“It was an aggressive display of physicality. They were rambunctious and trying to instigate a conflict,” Iron Eyes said. “We were wondering where their chaperones were. [I] was really trying to defuse the situation.”
Covington Catholic High School student attempted to harass & intimidate

Update on the hideous incident involving pro-Trump, MAGA hat-wearing high school students from Covington, Kentucky, who harassed Native American elder and Vietnam Veteran, Nathan Phillips at the Lincoln Memorial Mall yesterday.
Covington Catholic High School is the only Catholic school in the diocese, so the the church is definitely getting involved.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington, along with the school, acknowledged the situation Saturday afternoon, saying the matter is being investigated.
Laura Keener, of the diocese, released the following statement:
"We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan. 18, after the March for Life, in Washington, D.C. We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.
"The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion.We know this incident also has tainted the entire witness of the March for Life and express our most sincere apologies to all those who attended the March and all those who support the pro-life movement."

White House adviser Stephen Miller's disastrous interview with CNN's Jake Tapper yesterday ended with Tapper bringing the segment to an early close thanks to Miller's petulant behavior and refusal to answer any questions.
With Miller still babbling in the background, Tapper ran out of patience telling Miller, “I think I’ve wasted enough of my viewers’ time. Thank you, Stephen,” as he ended the segment.
Today we get reports that Miller would not leave the CNN studios and had to be escorted off the premises.
White House adviser Stephen Miller was escorted off the set of CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday after a contentious interview with host Jake Tapper. Two sources close to the situation told Business Insider that after the taping was done Miller was asked to leave several times. He ignored those requests and ultimately security was called and he was escorted out, the sources said. CNN declined to comment.
CBS News White House producer, Arden Farhi apparently acquired a transcript of the post-segment conversation between Tapper and Miller.
