Hollywood Reporter: Henry Cavill Will Not Return As "Superman"

Henry Cavill and his 'super' alter-ego (image via Instagram)

Color me sad as the news arrives that Henry Cavill (and his awesomely furry chest) will not appear as “Superman” in any future Warner Bros. DC films.

Cavill has played "Superman" in three films, including Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warners had been after Cavill to make a cameo in the upcoming Shazam flick starring Zachary Levi. But negotiations appear to have fallen apart and as THR writes, “The door is now closing on other potential Superman appearances.”

Several theories are being bandied about as to the shift in "super-strategy."

While one Warners source told THR that ‘scheduling conflicts’ cause the deal to disintegrate (Cavill recently signed to star in the new Netflix series, The Witcher),  another source claims the Witcher offer came after the Warners negotiations.

One studio insider suggested that Warners is merely going for the commonly attempted “reset button” on the DC universe of films after admitting “some parts of the previous movies didn’t work.”

I'll tell you what DID work - THIS:

(screen capture)

THR also mentions that with so many DC films in the pipeline Warners isn’t likely to produce a stand-alone Superman film anytime in the near future.

Not only is the Jason Momoa Aquaman movie set to arrive this December, but Wonder Woman 1984 is due in theaters November 2019, and openly queer Ezra Miller is scheduled to start shooting a Flash movie in early 2019.

Additional reports say Warners is shifting focus to a Supergirl origin movie.

Comparing the Superman franchise to the James Bond films, a studio source said, “Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors.”

Along that same line of thinking, THR mentions that Oscar winner Ben Affleck is not likely to return as “Batman.”

Cavill fans might be able to hold out some hope, though.

On Twitter this morning, Cavill’s manager tweeted a somewhat cryptic message which read, “Be peaceful, the cape is still in his closet. @wbpictures has been and continues to be our partners as they evolve the DC Universe. Anticipate a WB statement later today.”

No matter the outcome, we'll always be better for Cavill bringing us his furry-goodness as "the Man of Steel."

Superman Star Margot Kidder Dead At 69

Actress Margot Kidder

Best known for her portrayal of strong-willed reporter "Lois Lane" in the 1978 hit film Superman: The Movie, actress Margot Kidder has died at the age of 69.

People Magazine reports Kidder passed away on Sunday at her home in Livingston, Montana, of unknown causes.

Although she began her career in the 1960s, Kidder saw her star skyrocket after her turn as "Lois Lane" in Superman: The Movie opposite Christopher Reeve. She would go on to reprise the part of the intrepid Ms. Lane in three film sequels.

Other credits include 1974's Black Christmas, 1979's The Amityville Horror and Heartaches in 1981.

She also served as producer and starred as Eliza Doolittle in a 1983 adaptation of Pygmalion opposite Peter O’Toole for Showtime.

However, amid all that success, Kidder quietly waged war with mental health demons that eventually left her homeless.

From People:

After being reported missing for days in 1996, police took her away in handcuffs to Olive View-UCLA Medical Center.

“The woman we saw was in obvious mental distress,” Officer Rick Young of the Glendale police told PEOPLE at the time. “She didn’t think one person was following her. She thought a whole group of people were after her.”

Kidder told PEOPLE five months later that the root of most of her problems — which include “mood swings that could knock over a building” — was manic depression. She was first diagnosed with the condition by an L.A. psychiatrist eight years prior, but she refused to take the recommended prescription of lithium, the recommended treatment.

“It’s very hard to convince a manic person that there is anything wrong with them,” said Kidder, who was working on a memoir at the time. “You have no desire to sleep. You are full of ideas.”

She is survived by her daughter.

First Look At Tyler Hoechlin As TV's Newest "Superman"

We get our first look of former Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin in costume as "Superman" ahead of the his debut in Season 2 of Supergirl.

From Variety:

Hoechlin will appear as Clark Kent/Kal-El in the “Supergirl” Season 2 premiere, where the Man of Steel will visit his cousin Kara (Melissa Benoist) in National City.

This version of the iconic costume was designed by “Supergirl” costume designer Kiersten Ronning, and shares similarities with the big screen iteration of the Superman costume worn by Henry Cavill in the films “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” once again eschewing the iconic hero’s red shorts for a more streamlined design.

Variety goes on to say that, according to producers who spoke at Comic-Con, Supergirl will be having some differences of opinion with her famous cousin. So it's not going to be all roses and reunions with Superman on the scene.

Sneak Peek: "Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice"

Warner Brothers dropped this sneak peek at Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice just two days ago and it's already racked up over 8 million views.

The two things of interest here (besides Henry Cavill, who is "of interest" at all times to me, so that's a given):

1. Batman is often seen in a tight jam. And he always gets out. But we rarely see him look this vulnerable. Why is this clip what WB wants us to see?

2. The anger in Superman's face is so intense you have to wonder "what up, Supes?" According to sources, we know there's kryptonite in the film, so did someone use it for a kind of mind-control over the Man of Steel? Or, is this a dream sequence?

The rest of the trailer will debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice hits theaters March 25, 2016.

Check out this parody movie trailer for Man of Steel 2: The Secret is Out released by the French comedy channel It’s Big!

It features some serious heat between superheroes Batman and Superman.  Come on, we all suspected didn't we?

“Every hero has a secret,” the voiceover narrates. “But when it becomes too difficult to keep and the word starts to spread, they have to accept what they truly are.”

New Superman "Man Of Steel" races to new box office records

Warner Bros’ and Legendary Pictures’ Man Of Steel grossed $44M in North America on Friday and $36.3M Saturday.

The new Superman pic set a new June best-ever opening weekend record. It was the 2nd best debut of 2013 behind only Disney/Marvel’s Iron Man 3.

Internationally, Warner Bros says Man Of Steel ranked #1 everywhere with a gross of $71.6M from 9,710 screens in the 24 overseas markets in release. That made for a speeding worldwide total of $196.7M in its first 4 days.

I saw the movie today and it meets and exceeds expectations. The visual effects are not to be believed, and Henry Cavill (swoon) has fantastic chemistry with new "Lois Lane" Amy Adams.

Go. Just - go. Great adventure/sci fi/super hero movie. I had a great time. Can't wait for the next.

AND - Henry Cavill's "Clark Kent/Superman" is worth the price of admission just to look at him. Oh. My Gawd.

Henry Cavill - the new Superman

Click pic to view larger

Shirtless images of Henry Cavill have arrived for his role as Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.

Cavill's beard and the clothes he's clutching certainly seem to match other recent photos. Judging from his tattered pants, it's likely that Superman survived something that his clothes did not. Check out all the pictures for yourself!
