Paula Deen says she feels like a gay, African-American football player

Paula Deen, speaking to People Magazine, says she feels like Michael Sam, recently out NFL prospect:

“I feel like ‘embattled’ or ‘disgraced’ will always follow my name.

"It’s like that black football player who recently came out. He said, ‘I just want to be known as a football player. I don’t want to be known as a gay football player.’

"I know exactly what he’s saying. I’m fighting to get my name back."

I'm not quite sure that Michael Sam, SEC Defensive Player of the Year and upcoming NFL draftee, feels "disgraced" in any way.

But you Paula. Her grasp of the english language has always been a bit tenuous.

Paula Deen's legal team attempting to use Prop 8 decision to have lawsuit dismissed

Well, here's a novel courtroom defense: Paula Deen's lawyers are attempting to use last weeks Prop 8 decision from SCOTUS to have the lawsuit against her and her brother dismissed.

From the Advocate:

A former employee is suing Deen and her brother Earl "Bubba" Hiers for reportedly racist and sexist behavior in the workplace, their restaurant, Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House in Savannah, Ga. However, Deen's lawyers claim that the complainant is a white woman, so she does not have standing in court to claim that she was affected by racism, Politico reports.

The lawyers are using the Supreme Court's decision to dismiss Perry v. Hollingsworth last week, declaring that the proponents of Proposition 8 did not have legal standing to appeal the case in court.

Walmart ends business relationship with Paula Deen

The news keeps getting worse for Paula Deen.

After her contracts with the Food Network AND Smithfield Foods were both severed due to her admitting to using racist language, today comes the news from Walmsrt that they, too, are ending their business relationship with Paula Deen.

From The New York Times:

Paula Deen’s culinary empire suffered a new blow on Wednesday, as Walmart announced it was ending their lucrative partnership, selling cookware, food and other products branded with the celebrity chef’s name.

The news came hours after Ms. Deen made a tearful appearance on the “Today” show, insisting that she was not and never had been a racist, as a former employee has charged in a workplace-discrimination lawsuit. Since last week, Ms. Deen has lost two other major corporate contracts, with the Food Network and Smithfield Foods, after her deposition in a workplace-discrimination lawsuit came to widespread attention. In it, she admitted to using racist language, and tolerating racist jokes in one of her restaurants.

In a statement Wednesday afternoon, Walmart said, “We are ending our relationship with Paula Deen Enterprises and we will not place new orders beyond those already committed.” There are currently 215 Paula Deen-branded items on the company’s Web site, from aprons and salad dressings to reading glasses, china and a new line of "finishing butters."

New York Times Frank Bruni on Paula Deen and racism

Former New York Times restaurant reviewer Frank Bruni repudiates the idea that Paula Deen deserves "clemency" regarding her admitted racial comments, noting that she’s 66 years old and has lived her life far south of the Mason-Dixon:

"Please. All of her adult years postdate the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and she’s a citizen of the world, traveling wide and far to peddle her wares. If she can leave Georgia for the sake of commerce, she can leave Georgia in the realm of consciousness.

"Beyond which, people can change, growing past wrongful ways in the name of what’s right. We pass new laws. We adopt new language. That’s the recipe for progress: putting justice ahead of habit, principle over precedent."

Glenn Beck defends Paula Deen while wearing a boy scout uniform

Glenn Beck defends the First Amendment by saying that the Food Network's decision not to renew Paula Deen's contract is un-American and McCarthyism.

Right...

To be honest, who cares what he's saying...

1. He's wearing a boy scout uniform, which is kind of creepy in terms of TV wardrobe.

2. He's wandering around so much the camera man is running around to keep up with where he is. What's that about.

3. I'm sure Paula Deen would prefer that a nut like Glenn Beck wasn't going around siding with her.

4. Does anyone care what Glenn Beck thinks?

5. Did I mention the boy scout uniform?

Paula Deen releases 2nd video apology; fired from Food Network

After the first, erratic "apology" was pulled within minutes of being released, Paula Deen has now released a second, more coherent apology.

TMZ is reporting that the Food Network will not be renewing her contract that expires at the end of this month.

Paula Deen issues video apology for "n-word" scandal

Paula Deen has released a brief video statement regarding the recent news that she used the “N-word” and reminisced about plantation images of black people serving white guests.

Alyssa Rosenberg at Think Progress has an interesting take on the Deen debacle:

"What was striking both about some of the accusations she faced, and her sworn testimony in the deposition, was that Deen seemed more afraid of getting caught out being racist or being accused of having caused offense than of the idea that she might have caused someone else pain. To indulge in a bit of Southern nostalgia myself (though from the perspective of a character who saw the South for the hypocritical slave economy that it was), Deen is engaging in the same sort of self-justifying behavior Rhett Butler saw in Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With The Wind: “You’re like the thief who isn’t the least bit sorry he stole, but is terribly, terribly sorry he’s going to jail.”

I appreciate the apology, but does she seem a bit discombobulated here? She does TV, so I'm surprised this kind of "rough" edit is what she'd release...

Am I wrong? Thoughts?

UPDATE: This is getting stranger and stranger.  Now the video is removed from view.  Kind of erratic behavior I think. However, Raw Story has mirrored the video. See below.
