TMZ: Britney Spears Checks Into Mental Health Facility

Britney Spears (image via FB)
TMZ is reporting that pop star Britney Spears has been admitted to a mental health facility.

The gossip site shares that Spears has been anxious and distraught over her dad's illness, which is apparently becoming more complicated and not improving.

Jamie Spears ruptured his colon last year and has undergone two surgeries to address continuing complications.

Spears announced in early January that her Las Vegas residency at Park MGM was being postponed in order for her to focus on her father.

I don’t even know where to start with this, because this is so tough for me to say. I will not be performing my new show Domination. I’ve been looking forward to this show and seeing all of you this year, so doing this breaks my heart. However, it’s important to always put your family first… and that’s the decision I had to make. A couple of months ago, my father was hospitalized and almost died. We’re all so grateful that he came out of it alive, but he still has a long road ahead of him. I had to make the difficult decision to put my full focus and energy on my family at this time. I hope you all can understand. More information on ticket refunds is available on britneyspears.com. I appreciate your prayers and support for my family during this time. Thank you, and love you all… always.

This morning, Spears posted to her Instagram account an image with the phrase, "Fall in love with taking care of yourself, mind, body, spirit."

The caption for the post read, "We all need to take a little time for a little 'me time.'"

According to TMZ, Spears checked herself into a mental health facility "about a week ago where she will live for 30 days."

Britney Spears Cancels Upcoming Las Vegas Residency "Domination"

Britney Spears (image via Facebook/BritneySpears)

In an announcement on her social media today, pop star Britney Spears announced the cancellation of her upcoming residency "Domination" in Las Vegas which was set to open February 13.

“I don’t even know where to start with this, because this is so tough for me to say,” says the 37-year-old singer. “I will not be performing my new show Domination. I’ve been looking forward to this show and seeing all of you this year, so doing this breaks my heart.”

Stating that “it’s important to always put your family first,” Spears cites her father’s recent health complications and hospitalization for the cause of her decision.

Jamie Spears suffered a ruptured colon two months ago and underwent emergency surgery in Las Vegas. He remained hospitalized for 28 days.

Brit says she needs to put her “full focus and energy” on her family for now, and hoped that fans understand.

She closed by thanking fans for their continued support and prayers.

In a statement to Variety, Spears’ rep said the singer is taking “an indefinite work hiatus” until further notice.

“Domination” was scheduled for a 32-show run at the new Park MGM resort in Las Vegas.

It’s unclear if the production will be rescheduled at a later date.

“Domination” was to be the follow-up to Spears' initial Las Vegas residency, "Piece of Me," which ended a four-year run at Planet Hollywood’s Axis Theater in early 2018.

Las Vegas loves Britney, and Britney loves Sin City right back.

Last night, on the Las Vegas Strip, Britney Spears took part in an elaborate announcement event to share the news she’s returning to ‘the Entertainment Capital of the World’ with a new residency, titled Britney: Domination.

The new concerts will take place at the Park MGM’s Park Theater beginning in February, and will run through August.

Tickets go on sale on October 26th. For info, head over to ParkTheaterLV.com.

The announcement, live-streamed via Ellen DeGeneres’ YouTube channel, featured a huge build-up with video screens on trucks driving up and down the Strip, a massive light show and Britney music videos being projected on the side of the Park MGM resort.

Watch the live-stream below.

“I am so happy to be returning to my second home – Las Vegas!” said Britney. “I’m working on a brand-new show and I’m so excited for my fans to see it! It’s going to be so much fun being back on stage and I can’t wait to perform at Park Theater.”

Brit’s first Vegas run, Piece of Me, launched in 2013 at Planet Hollywood with an initial announcement of 50 performances over two years. That eventually stretched into almost 250 shows before closing in 2017.

According to Billboard, Piece of Me grossed more than $137 million during it’s four year run. Expect Brit to surpass those numbers with Britney: Domination.

Britney Spears To Be Honored With Vanguard Award At Los Angeles GLAAD Media Awards

Britney Spears
GLAAD announced today that pop superstar Britney Spears will be honored with this year's Vanguard Award at the 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on April 12.

Via press release:

GLAAD’s Vanguard Award is presented to media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance of LGBTQ people. Previous honorees include Jennifer Lopez, Cher, Kerry Washington, Elizabeth Taylor, Whoopi Goldberg, Drew Barrymore, Janet Jackson, Demi Lovato, and Patricia Arquette.

Britney Spears is a multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning pop icon, and one of the most successful and celebrated entertainers in pop history with more than 100 million records sold worldwide. Spears is a longtime ally and supporter of the LGBTQ community. She has reliably stood up for LGBTQ youth on GLAAD’s Spirit Day by going purple on social media to speak out against bullying. In 2017, Spears was among 140 entertainers including Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande, and Laverne Cox to speak out in an open letter against two anti-LGBTQ bills which targeted transgender youth in Texas and were later defeated.

Spears has a legacy of embracing her LGBTQ fans. Most recently, Spears penned a heartwarming love letter to the LGBTQ community with Billboard Pride in which she shared that the community’s unwavering loyalty and acceptance both uplift and inspire her. “I have a secret to share with you,” Spears wrote. “You see it’s actually you that lifts me up. The unwavering loyalty. The lack of judgment. The unapologetic truth. Acceptance! Your stories are what inspire me, bring me joy, and make me and my sons strive to be better people.”

Las Vegas: Kathy Griffin Becomes Britney's "Pet" In Concert

Kathy Griffin guests in Britney's "Freakshow"

This past weekend, Kathy Griffin was Britney Spears' special guest during the number "Freakshow" at Britney's PIECE OF ME at Planet Hollywood.

Looks like Kathy was more than willing to wear the collar and leash.

Although, doesn't Britney look like she's walking through the number? Such a shame since her dancers are fantastic and kill themselves putting on a show...

The famous twosome traded tweets later...

Review: Britney Spears opens in Las Vegas

I had the chance to see the highly anticipated opening of Britney Spears' "Piece Of Me" at Planet Hollywood here in Las Vegas.  A few thoughts based on my thirty years in entertainment:

• Her dancers are very good.

• When a review begins with praise for the dancers, not the star - well, you do the math...

• How is her singing? She sounds JUST like the records.  And you know what I mean when I say that.

• The choreography is good, but the choreographers clearly watched rehearsals from the center of the audience only.  Warning - if you plan on seeing the show, make sure your seats are dead center.  If you're on the sides of the audience, you get left out.  Britney rarely addresses house left or right.

• To be perfectly frank, Britney is an attractive girl.  But considering how much dancing she's been given to do alongside her dancers, she pales in comparison.  She doesn't hold her own.  The choreographers didn't do her any favors by putting her in that position.  She moves well; but having her attempt to keep up with A-list dancers doesn't work.  Or put another way - she needs to work harder to keep up. And right now, she's not doing that.

• The costumes are interesting but seem like re-hashed or discarded Madonna tour ideas.  It's not clear why or what the reasoning is behind what the dancers are wearing other than "it looks cool."

• The lighting and video screens are utilized well.  Some creative things are done incorporating the lights, scenic and techno elements.  It's not necessarily a coherent thread from beginning to end, but there are some visually interesting things going on.

I'd give credit to the creative team but a full list of those names aren't readily available to folks like me.  No programs were handed out, and nothing on a website that I've seen. A search of the internet reveals that Antony Ginandjar is one of the co-choreographers.  There may be another choreographer, but I got tired of googling the internet.  Note to producers - you're paying what you surely feel is a credible creative team for what should be a world-class production.  Show some pride in hiring those folks and list there names somewhere.

In the end, if you are a big Britney fan - you'll enjoy.

If you are looking for the intersection of creativity, talent and star power, I suggest a cocktail before you enter the theater at Planet Hollywood.

UPDATE: More detailed than my thoughts above, it seems the New York Times and I agree on just about everything. Check out the review there.

RuPaul and Britney Spears mashup "Work B*tch"

As I posted yesterday when Britney's song hit the public, I find this catchy - BUT we have to acknowledge that there's an undeniable connection here to RuPaul's iconic "Supermodel."

And now Super Chico has put it all together for us.

Drag queens rejoice! Britney Spears new single "Work Bitch"

Britney's newest single was leaked over the weekend before the planned launch on Monday night. I will say, knowing how much goes into launching a new record, her team must be disappointed big time that the "reveal" is blunted by this weekend woe :(

There have been some catchy tunes along the blond one's career. But I'll predict that this song, at the very least, will become a staple in many a drag queen's repertoire. The beat, the sas, the catch phrase "you better work, bitch..."

Although, as every good gay knows, RuPaul did it first :)

And don't you forget it.

Britney Spears signs $15 million deal with X Factor

After months of eight-figure negotiations, the pop star has finally signed her contract to join Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid as a judge on The X Factor.

From Queerty: “The contract is signed. There’s been a lot of back and forth over the past few weeks as they negotiated the small details, but she’s on. It’s all completed and Britney is beyond excited. She’s ready for this… She can’t wait to sit down next to Simon at the judges’ table and give this everything she’s got. She is excited about showing the world that she can do this, and do this well. This is the perfect next stage in her career. Both Britney and Simon are very excited to work together.”

 "Give this everything she's got?"

Show "the world that she can do this?"

Umm, no offense but isn't she just going to sit and offer opinions?

Britney Spears to be next judge on The X Factor?

J-Lo revitalized her career with a judge spot on American Idol. So now, it looks like Britney is about to give her career a boost with a gig on The X Factor.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Britney Spears’s fiancé Jason Trawick has been brokering the deal, although sources say X Factor head honcho Simon Cowell actually approached her first.

THR thinks this could be a good move: “Spears brings legitimacy as a successful recording artist, something critics of X Factor say was missing in last year’s competition, as well as a level of unpredictability and drama that also was largely absent from the Fox show when Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul were judges.”
