Benghazi Investigative Committee Quietly Disbands After $7.8 Million Spent On Clinton Witch Hunt

Having spent over $7.8 million over two and a half years, the special congressional committee investigating the 2012 terrorist attacks in Benghazi has officially disbanded.

The results of the witch hunt investigation showed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was not guilty or responsible for the deaths of four Americans who died in the U.S. compound in Libya.

According to USA Today, the report clocks in at more than 322,000 words.

As many know, Republicans had hoped to use the tragic deaths as ammunition against Clinton during the presidential campaign.

In one sitting, she famously gave 11 unflappable hours of testimony before the special committee.

Ambassador Chris Stevens' Family: We Do Not Blame Hillary Clinton For Benghazi

In the aftermath of the 800 page report by the Republican-led panel which investigated the attack on Benghazi, the sister of Ambassador Chris Stevens — one of the four American casualties from the September 11, 2012 attack on a compound in Benghazi, Libya — says that the fault does not lie with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Dr. Anne Stevens spoke to the New Yorker, and said, in part:

It is clear, in hindsight, that the facility was not sufficiently protected by the State Department and the Defense Department. But what was the underlying cause? Perhaps if Congress had provided a budget to increase security for all missions around the world, then some of the requests for more security in Libya would have been granted. Certainly the State Department is underbudgeted.

I do not blame Hillary Clinton or Leon Panetta. They were balancing security efforts at embassies and missions around the world. And their staffs were doing their best to provide what they could with the resources they had. The Benghazi Mission was understaffed. We know that now. But, again, Chris knew that. It wasn’t a secret to him. He decided to take the risk to go there. It is not something they did to him. It is something he took on himself.

Dr. Stevens went on to say about Hillary Clinton, “She has taken full responsibility, being head of the State Department, for what occurred. She took measures to respond to the review board’s recommendations. She established programs for a better security system.

"But it is never going to be perfect,” she admitted to The New Yorker. “I don’t see any usefulness in continuing to criticize her. It is very unjust.”

GOP-Led House Benghazi Panel Issues 800 Page Report - No Bombshell

Benghazi committee chairman Rep. Trey Gowdy

After two years and more than $7 million dollars, the GOP-led House investigation into the Benghazi attack of 2012 has concluded with no "bombshell" or new revelations.

CNN reports:

The more than 800-page report paints a picture of a perfect storm of bureaucratic inertia, rapidly worsening security in Libya and inadequate resources in the months that led up to the killings of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three colleagues on September 11, 2012.

The attack was initially thought to be perpetrated by an angry mob responding to a video made in the U.S. mocking Islam and the Prophet Mohammed, but the assault was later determined to be a terrorist attack -- a finding Republicans accused the White House of covering up to protect President Barack Obama's re-election prospects.

The House Benghazi Committee report doesn't directly blame Hillary Clinton, who was secretary of state at the time and is now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, for the attacks. But it does suggest she and other administration officials did not adequately address the risks involved. It also found Stevens himself bore responsibility for securing his post.

At the end of the day, House Republicans were unable to actually pin blame on Hillary Clinton for the attack. The most they could attach to Clinton was that she should have realized the situation in Libya was dangerous from available intelligence.

I'm guessing they mean that in the same way that President George W. Bush "should" have been able to avoid 9/11 after intelligence reports were available saying "Bin Laden Determined To Strike In US?"

Oddly, I don't recall House Republicans holding investigations into Dubya's culpability.

The Republican-run Congress spent more time investigating Benghazi than both 9/11 and the Iraq War combined, and yet thousands more Americans died in those conflicts.

Legendary Newsman Dan Rather On Hillary Clinton & The Benghazi Hearing

Legendary journalist Dan Rather posted this on Facebook regarding Hillary Clinton's testimony this week at a Congressional hearing investigating the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi:

Hillary Clinton has done a lot in her life. But I think she likely cleared her path to the Democratic nomination for president, and maybe very well the Oval Office itself, by what she didn't do. She didn't lose her cool.

Her performance in a grueling marathon of a Congressional hearing on Benghazi (or more accurately on Clinton herself and maybe Sidney Blumenthal?) was one of poise, stoicism, self-confidence and maturity. Just the sort of attributes her questioners lacked. In the language of poker, she was drawing aces and the committee was drawing deuces. They might not admit it publicly, but even many Republican leaders know it's true. Hillary Clinton is a stronger general election candidate today than she was before the hearing.

It has often been said that you vote for president with your heart more than your head. And I think for all the questions about Clinton's record among the Democratic base, whether she is progressive enough on economic issues or too hawkish on foreign policy, the real sense of unease boiled down to intangible questions about her personality, values and character.

Yesterday assuaged many of those concerns. When combined with her recent debate performance and Biden deciding not to run, this is arguably one of the best stretches of her political career. Where are all those whither Hillary articles now? It is still early and a lot can still go wrong, but I believe this is the Hillary Clinton that so many Democrats wanted to love - tough, smart, unflappable, a woman who is ready to be president.

Hillary Clinton Laughs At Rep. Martha Roby's "Home Alone All Night" Question

From Talking Points Memo:
There was one question at the Benghazi hearing that made Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton crack up in laughter Thursday.

Clinton, who was secretary of state at the time of the Benghazi attack, testified Thursday about the incident before the special House committee tasked with investigating it.

After hours of inquiries, a question from Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL) made Clinton erupt with laughter.

"Who else was at your home, were you alone?" Roby asked.

"I was alone, yes," Clinton replied.

"The whole night?" Roby asked.

"Well, yes, the whole night," Clinton said, bursting with laughter.

"Well, I don't know why that's funny," Roby said.

Clearly, asking a married woman if she was home alone "all night" is an awkward kind of question.

Hillary Clinton Campaign Pre-Empts Benghazi Hearing With Secretary Of State Highlight Reel

In advance of her upcoming appearance before a Congressional hearing regarding questions about the use of a private email server, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign has released this spot highlighting her many accomplishments.

The video is a virtual "sizzle reel" of her work at the State Department that includes endorsements and testimonials from Cabinet officials and other high level politicos praising Clinton’s diplomatic work.

According to the Washington Post, the campaign will also organize public appearances and outreach by prominent surrogates to make a case this week that Clinton’s four years as secretary of state are anything but a liability.

It's worth noting that although she left the State department with approval ratings well into the high 60%, Donald Trump (who previous to his own campaign praised her) now calls her tenure a disaster.

Second Republican Admits Benghazi Committee Aimed At Bringing Hillary Clinton Down

Rep. Richard Hanna of New Yor

A few weeks ago, House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy accidentally revealed that the GOP focus of the congressional committee "investigating" the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi is actually on bringing down Hillary Clinton's presidential candidacy.

Now, another GOP lawmaker, Rep. Richard Hanna of Central New York, has admitted the same during a radio interview.

Via Syracuse.com:

"This may not be politically correct, but I think that there was a big part of this investigation that was designed to go after people – an individual: Hillary Clinton," Hanna said in a live interview with Utica radio station WIBX (950 AM).

Clinton's campaign responded, "Yet another House Republican has admitted the House Select Committee on Benghazi is a politically motivated sham intended to damage Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign."

In September, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., talked about the success of the committee's investigation in hurting Clinton's poll numbers. McCarthy later said he misspoke.

A former staffer for the Benghazi committee came forward this past weekend and claimed that the panel's chairman, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., fired him for not keeping the investigation focused on Clinton.

"Kevin McCarthy basically blew himself up with that comment over the Benghazi committee," Hanna said, adding, "Sometimes the biggest sin you can commit in D.C. is to tell the truth."

Congressional Democrats To Release Full Transcripts of Benghazi Investigation Interviews

Congressional Democrats have finally decided to push back against what they call "misleading" edited leaks of testimony from the committee investigating the attack of the American consulate in Benghazi.

From The Daily Beast:

Democrats are announcing their intention to unilaterally release full transcripts of private interviews that the committee has conducted, starting with the testimony of Hillary Clinton chief of staff Cheryl Mills. It’s a dramatic move from the five Democrats on the committee, which under the direction of Rep. Elijah Cummings has so far insisted that it won’t leak information to journalists while the investigation is underway.

[snip]

Democratic efforts to press back against the committee have reached an apex in the past week, as they attempt to capitalize on a misstep by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who linked the committee’s efforts to a political effort to hobble Hillary Clinton’s bid for the White House.

“Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee. A select committee,” McCarthy said on Fox. “What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because she’s untrustable. But no one would have known that any of that had happened had we not fought to make that happen.”

The Benghazi inquiry is now the longest special Congressional inquiry in the history of the United States. Longer than Watergate, longer than Iran/Contra, longer than the investigation into the shooting death of President Kennedy.

After eight Congressional investigation into the attack in Benghazi, at a cost of over $4 million to American taxpayers, no evidence of wrongdoing has been found.

Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy Admits Benghazi Investigations Meant To Damage Hillary Clinton's Campaign

They say in Washington, D.C. politics that a "gaffe" is when someone accidentally tells the truth.

The presumed new Speaker of the House, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, did just that when speaking to Fox News' Sean Hannity last night when he let the cat out of the bag and admitted that the past year's Republican led witch hunt regarding the many Benghazi investigations were conducted with the intent of bringing down Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

Speaking about his presumed role as the incoming Speaker of the House, here's McCarthy's admission:

What you’re going to see is a conservative speaker, that takes a conservative Congress, that puts a strategy to fight and win. And let me give you one example. Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right?

But we put together a Benghazi special committee. A select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because she’s untrustable. But no one would have known that any of that had happened had we not fought to make that happen.

Tweet of the Day: Straighten That Squirrel On Your Head

Newest #Benghazi Investigation By GOP-led House Shows No Wrongdoing By Obama Administration

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is acting like a child who was just told there is no Santa Claus over the new GOP-led House Benghazi report which cleared the Obama administration of any wrongdoing in its response to the Benghazi attack.

"I think the report is full of crap," Graham said on CNN's "State of the Union."

Even though this is the sixth government report on Benghazi which essentially clears members of the administration, Graham holds fast to the idea that officials in the White House altered the Benghazi talking points after the attack.

During his Sunday appearance on CNN, host Gloria Borger told Graham that the House report concludes that the administration received bad information at first and did not lie.

"That's a bunch of garbage," Graham shot back. "That's a complete bunch of garbage."

While Republicans desperately want to use the Benghazi tragedy against Hillary Clinton in the upcoming 2016 presidential campaign, the latest investigation by the GOP-led House again shows there's no "there" there:

Similar to five other government reports, the one released by the House Intelligence Committee on Friday said that the administration had not intentionally misled the public about what occurred during the attacks in talking points it created for officials to use in television appearances that turned out to be inaccurate.

It also said that no order was given by the military to “stand down” in responding to try to save the four Americans killed in the attacks, a claim that Republicans have made based on the account of a member of the security team in Benghazi that day.

[snip]

“The effort to turn the Benghazi tragedy into a political scandal never had a factual basis,” said David Brock, founder of Correct the Record, a group that defends Mrs. Clinton in the news media, and author of the e-book “The Benghazi Hoax.”

“The Republican committee report should close the case,” he added. “If the scandal persists into 2016, it will only be for partisan reasons.”

GOP-led House Intelligence Committee finds no White House wrongdoing on Benghazi

I can't IMAAAAAGINE why I haven't seen this story on Fox News.

I mean, it IS about Benghazi.

From San Francisco Chronicle:

The House Intelligence Committee, led by Republicans, has concluded that there was no deliberate wrongdoing by the Obama administration in the 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, said Rep. Mike Thompson of St. Helena, the second-ranking Democrat on the committee.

The panel voted Thursday to declassify the report, the result of two years of investigation by the committee. U.S. intelligence agencies will have to approve making the report public.

Thompson said the report "confirms that no one was deliberately misled, no military assets were withheld and no stand-down order (to U.S. forces) was given."

MSNBC's Steve Benen wrote yesterday:

Taken together, the deadly violence in Benghazi two years ago has now been investigated by the House Intelligence Committee, the Senate Intelligence Committee, the independent State Department Accountability Review Board, the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the House Armed Services Committee, the House Committee on Oversight & Government Reform, and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

How many of them uncovered evidence of a cover-up? None.

Learn To Speak Benghazi

Animated cartoon by Pulitzer Prize-winner Mark Fiore.

As congressional Republicans keep beating the Benghazi drum heading into this fall's elections, it might be helpful for the rest of the world to understand and master the language of "Benghazi."

Simplified, the language of "Benghazi" allows Republicans to continue to ignore the business of the US and launch two or three more investigations of the Benghazi attacks.

Because the seven or eight investigations held so far weren't enough...

Politics.

Watters keeps trying to push his point of a "scandal" even though an investigation found the Obama Administration was NOT responsible for any mishandling.

Rep. Darrell Issa says an "act of terror" is not a "terrorist act"

On September 12, 2012, the day after the Benghazi attacks, Obama delivered a speech in the Rose Garden in which he referred to the attacks as an "act of terror," saying: "No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for." The following day, Obama twice referred to the attacks as an act of terror, once in Colorado and once in Las Vegas.

During an appearance on Fox News' America Live, Issa accused Obama of minimizing the attacks by referring to them as an "act of terror," saying: "An act of terror is different than a terrorist attack. The truth is, this was a terrorist attack."

Perhaps in the world of Washington DC politics, there might be a difference in the phraseology? But in the clip, Issa keeps saying "the American people deserve 'real time' information." I seriously believe that if you tell the American people something was an "act of terror" or a "terrorist attack" - the American people perceive those as the same thing.

This is slicing and dicing, parsing and chopping language to help support the idea that something that didn't happen (a cover-up), happened.
