Rethinking your dog's food

Michael with Bear at the vet

Recently, our youngest dog, Bear, had some health issues that reminded us how important it is that we pay attention to not only playtime with our furry family members, but the care we give them.

According to a Packaged Facts survey, 83% of pet owners consider their pet to be a member of the family.  I know we do.

As humans, we can choose what we do with our bodies and what we eat. But our pets really rely on us to make smart and healthy choices on their behalf.

One of the biggest decisions we make for pets every day is the food we fed them. So I decided to explore better options on the pet food front for Bear and his siblings that would help give them optimum health.  He's over ten now, and I want him healthy for as long as possible.

There are tons of choices out there and when you dig into it, there are a lot of factors to weigh when buying a better #dogfood. Obviously the ingredients, but are they natural? Are there artificial colors or fillers? And is the food a good value for the money?

I’m currently feeding the kids Wellness Complete Health.

Rated by DogFoodAdvisor as “Highly Recommended,” Wellness Complete Health focuses on natural, high-quality proteins and fats in their dog food recipes.

Wellness recipes do not include added artificial colors, flavors or ingredients. Instead, what you get are:

  • Omega 3 & 6 Mix – Offering guaranteed levels of essential fatty acids for cellular function and healthy skin
  • Essential Vitamins & Minerals – Designed for cellular health, immunity and disease resistance
  • Fruit & Veggie Antioxidants – A proactive step in improving your pet’s nutrition

They have a cute website that compares their pet food to others you may have tried.

I found Wellness Complete at my neighborhood Petsmart Store, but you can click here to find your local pet supply retailer or online retailer.

Plus, there’s a resource website, Naturally Well Pet Community, where you can find tips and advice from veterinarians, discounts, giveaways - all for free.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s, I watched my dad feed our dogs whatever brand was popular at the time.  Today,  with just a little internet research, we can do better than that.
