Last night I attended a reunion of several of my Syracuse University classmates at the College of Visual and Performing Arts Gala 2011 to honor Vanessa Williams as this year's "Icon of Style."
The fantastic event featured a fashion show of the top collections from the fashion design program's Class of 2011: Hannah Slocum, Syreeta Chantal Herbert, Torrey Hancock, LaTimberly Simone Johnson, Marteal Boniello, Sara Louise Coccioletti, Naomi S. Tilewick, Andrea McInnes, Jocelyn Tratta, Leilani Maldonado, Morgan Julia Bisignano and Dayna Shay Teitelbaum. I tried to take some photos of the terrific designs but a runway photog I'm not.
This was the first time since I left college I had seen a group of my classmates and we had an amazing time catching up over the evening. It was fantastic to see Gary, Tim, Mandy, Meri, Diane and Vanessa all together again. Thanks to Vanessa for reaching out and getting us together. Let's do it again next year!

You all look AMAZING!! No one's aged a BIT!! So wonderful to see those faces!
ReplyDeleteWOW Vanessaaaa, you girl looks fascinating !!! You absolutely deserve this award "Icon of Style" !
ReplyDeleteI think it's a childish action to remove my comment, just because I don't agree that her style is so amazing.
ReplyDeleteSO what I was saying that most people in Europe, won't consider miss Williams as an icon of style. Because she is not al lady with class and not natural anymore. Most of the times she is wearing something tacky (like her shoes and 'belt' she's wearing in this picture).
I think she's fantastic. Gorgeous and stylish. Great sense of style. Thank you Vanessa for inspiring so many.
ReplyDeleteWow - go Vanessa! You look amazing. But you always do.
ReplyDeleteTo the person from Europe - maybe you don't get it or maybe it's just regional. Americans think Vanessa is one of the most beautiful women in the world. Not sure why you would take the time out of life to be critical. So many other things to do in the world that are positive. - Stephanie
Vanessa has a great sense of fashion and it is undeniable that she deserves her "Icon of Style Award". Despite being the epitome of beauty, Vanessa knows how to present herself to her best advantage and she knows how to enhance her amazing figure. If you look back at how she's dressed for the past few years, you notice that she never gets it wrong, whether it is on the red carpet, or out and about.
ReplyDeleteI am from Europe (France).
I agree with the May 22, 2011 7:35pm comment (above). I do however feel that people have the right to disagree. Vanessa has a Twitter account where people do nothing but compliment her 24/7. I doubt that one person's critique to the contrary will destroy her.
ReplyDeleteThis is the same woman who overcame the most humiliating (well, today trendy) scandal and returned with 20+ years of more success than most people ever experience in the arts.
She is motivated, yes beautiful (still), driven, classy and giving. All of that while holding it down as a SINGLE mother of 4 while still in her 40s. That is incredible.
I don't know nor care about style, and don't think of Vanessa when I think of style. Maybe this was the only award they could come up with to honor her. Whatever the reason or occasion, she deserves to be honored. I would make up an award just to give her. The "Damn Girl, I Would Go Gay for a Day with You" Award. Y'know? Whateva ;)
Don't get me wrong, I like her. Well maybe it's namely her characters at the abc-shows. But it was never my intention to distroy her. And even if it was, thanI totally agree with you Phantom, I don't think I have the power for that(LOL)
ReplyDeleteBut sometimes we have to be honest, like now. An Icon of style that's just not Vanessa. Come those shoes, they are not classy they are for a pole dancer.
Why you talk all of a sudden about she being a single mom? That has nothing to do with this.
