Megan Kelly Fired From NBC After Blackface Controversy

TMZ is reporting that TODAY show host Megyn Kelly, formerly of Fox News, has been let go after her remarks about blackface earlier this week.

"Megyn Kelly Today" aired a repeat on Thursday morning, 2 days after she uncorked the absurd comment that it's okay to wear blackface at Halloween. Sources connected to the network tell us unless a Hail Mary is thrown and caught at some point today ... Megyn is gone for good.

The split with NBC comes the day after Megyn's emotional on-air apology where she insisted she'd learned a lesson due to the backlash.

The mea culpa was clearly a case of too little, too late for the Peacock ... which, to be honest, had issues with Megyn's show even before the blackface blowup. Translation: the ratings were terrible. They'd dropped more than 30 percent, year-to-year, in her time slot.

TMZ goes on to say that her co-workers apparently 'hated' being on-air with her.

During coverage of Dr. Christine Ford's testimony, for example, Kelly was part of a panel with NBC veterans Savannah Guthrie, Lester Holt, Andrea Mitchell and Chuck Todd.

Kelly's blunt, overtly conservative style was so off-putting, Mitchell left the panel before the segment was over.

I can admit to watching her morning show several times, but it was painful. Morning 'light fare' doesn't suit Kelly at all.

According to The Daily Mail, Kelly apparently has a "no-break" deal with NBC which means she will walk away with a payout of $69 million.

Kelly's talent agency, CAA, has also dropped her as well.

Gaslighting minorities for years saying things like, "what's wrong with dressing in blackface" and "Santa is white" and walking away with $69M (i.e., being paid NOT to work) is the white privilege-est thing ever.

Megyn Kelly Steps In It Over Blackface, Don Lemon Calls Her Out, Kelly Apologizes

Today Show host Megan Kelly got into hot water yesterday when she questioned why blackface wasn't ok for Halloween?

Seriously?

During a round-table conversation about Halloween costumes, Kelly said that blackface was, “OK when I was a kid as long as you were dressing like a character,” and said she doubted whether blackface was actually racist.

“What is racist?” she asked. “Because you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween.”

Umm, yeah. You do.

Kelly sent a memo to staffers at NBC apologizing for her lack of understanding:

When we had the roundtable discussion earlier today about the controversy of making your face look like a different race as part of a Halloween costume, I suggested that this seemed okay if done as part of this holiday where people have the chance to make themselves look like others. The iconic Diana Ross came up as an example. To me, I thought, why would it be controversial for someone dressing up asDiana Ross to make herself look like this amazing woman as a way of honoring and respecting her?

I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry. The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep.

I’ve never been a “pc” kind of person — but I understand that we do need to be more sensitive in this day and age. Particularly on race and ethnicity issues which, far from being healed, have been exacerbated in our politics over the past year.

Last night, on CNN, hosts Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon discussed the debacle. Lemon came straight out of the gate with a truth bomb saying, "Megyn is 47 years old, she's our age, there has never been a time in her 47 years that blackface has been acceptable."

Today, Kelly began her show with an apology:

"I want to begin with two words, I'm sorry..The country feels so divided and I have no wish to add to that pain and offense. Megyn Kelly: I Know Women Complained About Bill O'Reilly At Fox News Because I Complained About Him

Megyn Kelly, the former Fox News star, told her Megyn Kelly Today audience on NBC that while Fox News Corp. promised many that the work environment for female workers would improve after ousting network head Roger Ailes, and hosts Bill O'Reilly & Eric Bolling, no real change has happened.

In an emotional address, Kelly confirmed to her viewers, "O’Reilly’s suggestion that no one ever complained about his behavior is false. I know because I complained."

Kelly also shared that victims are often bullied into silence through “fear of public shaming, including through the media.” She named names and pointed fingers at Irena Briganti, Fox’s media relations chief, who she says “is known for her vindictiveness.”

“To this day [Briganti] pushes negative articles on certain Ailes accusers like the one you are looking at right now,” Kelly said.

Kelly’s monologue comes on the heels of a bombshell report in the New York Times which revealed that O’Reilly paid a $32 million settlement to one woman, Lis Wiehl, just before Fox News resigned him to a huge new contract. Fox News was aware of the basic terms of the settlement, if not the exact amount.

Speaking on Glenn Beck's radio show today, Bill O’Reilly proclaimed he’s being attacked for political purposes and that it’s been a “horror show” for him and his family.

This past weekend, The New York Times reported that O'Reilly agreed to a $32 million settlement to a former legal analyst who had accused O’Reilly of harassment.

As has been said elsewhere - no one pays $32 million over false allegations.

UPDATED: Megyn Kelly Asks A Fan If "Will & Grace" Turned Him Gay

Monday saw the launch of Megyn Kelly's Today Show and it seems she's going to need some time to find her "light-hearted morning show" banter.

Speaking with the cast of Will & Grace, the former Fox News host introduced a superfan of the iconic 90s sitcom, Russel Turner, from the audience.

Things got a bit awkward from the get-go.

“Is it true that you became a lawyer—and you became gay—because of Will?” Kelly asked the excited Turner.

Fortunately, Turner was quick on the fly: “I look at Will Truman, I’m like, ‘He has it made.' Lawyer, best apartment in New York, and gay? Come on, trifecta.”

After surprising Turner with tickets to Los Angeles to a taping and backstage tour of Will & Grace, Kelly closed out the segment with another graceless turn of phrase: “I don’t know about the lawyer thing, but I think the Will & Grace thing and the gay thing is going to work out great!”

UPDATE: Debra Messing took to her Instagram afterwards to say “Honestly I didn’t know it was MK until that morning. The itinerary just said Today show appearance. Regret going on. Dismayed by her comments.”

She later deleted that comment but several folks screen-capped it.

Ellen DeGeneres: "Trump Is Dividing Us All And I Just Don't Want Him On My Show"

Donald Trump will not be sitting for a chat on ELLEN - this we now know for sure.

Speaking with Megyn Kelly in advance of her new morning talk show Megyn Kelly Today, DeGeneres asked if she would want to interview Trump on her new talk show.

“I would not say no to the sitting president of the United States,” Kelly answered. “Would you?”

“Yeah,” DeGeneres said to a roar of applause. “He is who he is and he has enough attention and he has his Twitter account and he has ways to get his message across. There’s nothing that I’m going to say to him that’s going to change him.”

“I don’t want to give him a platform because it validates him and for me to have someone on the show I have to at least admire them in some way. And I can’t have someone that I feel is not only dangerous for the country and for me personally as a gay woman but to the world. He is dividing all of us and I just don’t want him on my show,” DeGeneres added.

During her time on the air, DeGeneres has hosted U.S. presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush on her show.

Megyn Kelly Gets Tepid Reviews For Putin Interview

While I'm sure she got the ratings she wanted out of her debut on NBC last night, what Megyn Kelly didn't get was anything of substance out of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

I'll admit she did seem to ask the right questions, but got no where as Putin was very much in control of the interview throughout. She never seemed to have the right followup question ready, and Putin made sure to ridicule the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

"For me, this is just amazing. You created a sensation out of nothing," Putin said. "And out of this sensation, you turned it into a weapon of war against the current president. Well, this is, you know, you're just, you people are so creative over there. Good job. Your lives must be boring."

Additionally, there were no questions regarding the rounding up and torture of gay men in Chechnya.

Megyn Kelly's New Daily NBC Show To Take Over 3rd Hour Of The TODAY Show

More details about the new Megyn Kelly deal at NBC News:

It looks like Kelly will be taking over the 9AM hour of The TODAY Show, settling in between the highly rated 7-9AM block, hosted by Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie, and the fun & fluffy 10AM slot hosted by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb.

Also - the new show will be Kelly-branded, not a component of the TODAY Show banner.

A network source said that timing on everything involving Kelly is still up in the air, including when she will join NBC News and when her new shows will debut. Speaking Tuesday evening on her Fox News Channel show, The Kelly File, Kelly said her last show would air Friday. Her contract with Fox News runs through July though, so she may not be able to officially join NBC News until that contract expires.

Besides hosting her own daytime program, Kelly also will anchor a Sunday night news magazine and jump in on breaking news and political stories.

The 9 a.m. hour of Today has been a trouble spot for NBC. It tries to be a take on the panel talk show, with Al Roker and Tamron Hall leading a discussion of pop culture and light news with multiple hosts. Last August, the hour suffered a further setback when Today brought on Billy Bush to lead the hour, and soon Bush and Roker were clashing on air about Bush’s kid-gloves interview of Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte. Bush was then fired in October after video leaked of him and now-President-elect Donald Trump speaking lewdly about women.

“After more than a dozen years at Fox News, I have decided to pursue a new challenge …. I’ll be leaving Fox News at the week’s end and starting a new adventure, joining the journalists at NBC News, who I deeply admire,” said Kelly on her show.

The New York Times is reporting that Megyn Kelly, 12 year veteran host of Fox News and one of the network's biggest stars, has decided to jump ship and head to NBC News:

The NBC News chairman, Andrew Lack, wooed Ms. Kelly away from Fox News by offering her a triple role in which she will host her own daytime news and discussion program, anchor an in-depth Sunday night news show and take regular part in the network’s special political programming and other big-event coverage.

The move will herald a seismic shift in the cable news landscape, where Ms. Kelly had become the second-most watched host — after Bill O’Reilly of Fox News — and often helped define the national political debate, especially over the last year as Donald J. Trump regularly attacked her, at times in viciously personal terms.

Ms. Kelly’s departure would upend Fox News’s vaunted prime-time lineup and inject a new dose of tumult just a few months after the departure of the network’s powerful founding chairman, Roger Ailes, who was ousted after several women made allegations that he sexually harassed them.

Megyn Kelly Memoir: Fox News Leaked Debate Questions To Trump Campaign

You'll recall just weeks ago Republicans railed against the DNC when an email from WikiLeaks seemed to confirm that Donna Brazile had leaked the Clinton campaign a debate question prior to one of the Democratic primary debates.

Outrage! Fury!

I wouldn't hold your breath for the same reaction as we now learn that someone leaked debate questions to the Trump campaign as well.

From the New York Times report about Megyn Kelly's new memoir:

Ms. Kelly writes that her problems started in August, the Monday before the first Republican presidential primary debate. She had just done a segment on her show, “The Kelly File,” that infuriated Mr. Trump. He refused to make his own scheduled appearance on her show unless she phoned him personally. “I almost unleashed my beautiful Twitter account against you,” she says he told her, “and I still may.”

Then, the day before the first presidential debate, Mr. Trump was in a lather again, Ms. Kelly writes. He called Fox executives, saying he’d heard that her first question “was a very pointed question directed at him.” This disconcerted her, because it was true: It was about his history of using disparaging language about women.

She doesn’t speculate where the leak came from. (She reports. You decide.) But that’s another unambiguous takeaway from this book: Parts of Fox — or at the very least, Roger Ailes, the network’s chairman until July, when he was given the boot after several allegations of sexual harassment were made against him — seemed to be nakedly colluding with the Republican presidential nominee.

Of course, the very first question Kelly asked was directed to Trump about his treatment and language towards women. Trump was so angry about the question he launched his much ballyhooed Twitter war against Kelly.

Megyn Kelly Details Sexual Assault Attempts By Roger Ailes In New Memoir

Radar Online is reporting that Fox News host Megyn Kelly's new memoir, Settle For More, includes new accounts of sexual assault by former Fox News head Roger Ailes.

Ailes' advances apparently began in 2005.

She writes that she was informed by her managing editor that she’d “captured the attention of Mr. Ailes” and she was summoned to the first of a series of meetings in his Manhattan office.

“Roger began pushing the limits,” she alleges. “There was a pattern to his behavior. I would be called into Roger’s office, he would shut the door, and over the next hour or two, he would engage in a kind of cat-and-mouse game with me — veering between obviously inappropriate sexually charged comments (e.g. about the ‘very sexy bras’ I must have and how he’d like to see me in them) and legitimate professional advice.”

He offered to advance her career “in exchange for sexual favors,” she writes, and even though she says she rejected “every single one,” she claims he tried “physical advances.” But in January 2006, she claims, he “crossed a new line — trying to grab me repeatedly and kiss me on the lips.” When she shoved him away, she alleges, “he asked me an ominous question: ‘When is your contract up?’ And then, for the third time, he tried to kiss me.”

According to Kelly's publisher, the Ailes accounts were added at the last minute to her memoir.

I have several friends who work for Fox News. All were very disappointed in Ailes' behavior, and said when they thought back over the years it didn't really surprise them. However, my friends being all men, they didn't have the same perspective on the sexual harassment as the women who came forward.

I'm told that the lawsuit by Gretchen Carlson was settled so quickly because she had been recording Ailes' advances over the past year, and the recordings were going to be played in public if the case went to court.

Megyn Kelly Slaps Back At Newt Gingrich

In a raucous back and forth between Fox News' Megyn Kelly and serial adulterer Newt Gingrich last night, Gingrich demanded that Kelly call Bill Clinton a "sexual predator" and informed her she was "fascinated with sex."

From NPR:

"You are fascinated with sex, and you don't care about public policy," Gingrich said.

Kelly replied, "Me, really?"

Gingrich: "That's what I get out of watching you tonight."

Kelly: "You know what, Mr. Speaker? I'm not fascinated by sex, but I am fascinated by the protection of women and understanding what we're getting in the oval office ... "

Gingrich then brought up former President Bill Clinton, saying he will be "back in the East Wing [of the White House], because, after all, you are worried about sexual predators," an apparent reference to Clinton's affair with intern Monica Lewinsky, which led to impeachment charges against Clinton while Gingrich was speaker.

Gingrich challenged Kelly. "I just want to hear you use the words 'Bill Clinton, sexual predator.' I dare you. Say 'Bill Clinton, sexual predator.' "

Kelly responded that her program had covered allegations against the former president, before adding that "he's not on the ticket."

Kelly then noted that the program was running out of time. "We're going to have to leave it at that, and you can take your anger issues and spend some time working on them, Mr. Speaker. Thanks for being here."

Trump Campaign Manager: Trump Does "Hurl Insults" But It's The Victim's Fault

Donald Trump's new campaign manager (is this version 3.0?) Kellyanne Conway sat down with Fox News' Megyn Kelly to chat on several Trumpian topics, including his penchant for insulting folks he doesn't like via the campaign stump and Twitter.

After Conway told the media this past Sunday that Trump "doesn't hurl personal insults," Megyn Kelly had to call Conway out.

After Trump took to Twitter to slam Mika Brzezinski as “neurotic” and call her the “very insecure long-time girlfriend” of co-host Joe Scarborough, Fox News host Megyn Kelly recounted how Conway had argued Trump doesn’t employ personal attacks.

“Now, you know that’s not true,” Kelly said on her show.

Conway replied that Trump “doesn’t do it without being attacked first,” a well-worn defense Trump himself has used since his campaign's infancy.

“But does that excuse it? Just today he called Mika Brzezinski neurotic, which is another term, basically, for mentally ill,” the Fox News host responded. “He’s called other female news personalities things like crazy. The man does hurl personal insults.”

“But not unprompted,” Conway said.

It's always interesting the language games these surrogates play. Note how Kellyanne won't say that Trump will "deport all 11 million undocumented immigrants." She's clearly dodging a word or phrase that she doesn't want uttered on record. And while she gets away with it, the viewer sees that she's dodging. And that throws up a flag.

The questions about insults starts at the 6:50 mark, but I think the full interview is worth watching.

Megyn Kelly: Must Trump Help His Detractors So "Generously?"

Fox News host Megyn Kelly finds Donald Trump's urges to rehash his own controversies on a daily basis mind-blowing.

From mocking a disabled reporter, believing he saw folks celebrate the attack on 9/11, to even his feud with her, Kelly finds it all baffling.

Kelly also pointed out that, despite Trump bragging about it, ramps for the disabled are mandatory. Trump supporter David Wohl pointed out how expensive they are. Kelly literally buried her head in her hands and deadpanned, “Oh, good God.”

She said she understands that the media is biased against Trump, but, Kelly cried, “Must he help them?! Must he help them so generously every day?!”

Fox News' Megyn Kelly Has Private Meeting With Donald Trump

Fox News' Megyn Kelly, after months of attacks by Donald Trump, privately met with the Trumpster at his Fifth Avenue Trump Towers yesterday in an attempt to "clear the air" between the two, and discus a possible interview on her evening broadcast.

Kelly said the meeting was held at her request and was an effort to clear the air between herself and Trump. Trump has publicly attacked Kelly on a number of occasions, ever since she grilled him on his past comments about women at the first Republican primary debate last year.

“We met for about an hour, just the two of us, and had a chance to clear the air,” Kelly said. “Mr. Trump and I discussed the possibility of an interview. And I hope we will have news to announce on that soon.”

Kelly has largely tried to stay above the fray, though she acknowledged at Tina Brown’s Women in the World conference last week that Trump’s attacks on her have been “unprecedented for a presidential candidate.”

It clearly pays well to battle with Donald Trump as evidenced by Fox News' host Megyn Kelly newly announced $10 million book deal.

I'll say this: if Donald Trump can't handle Fox News' Megyn Kelly, he's gonna be knee-deep in trouble onstage with Hillary Clinton.

Fox News' Megyn Kelly Slaps Down Anti-Gay Brian Brown Over Marriage Equality & SCOTUS

In an effort to find some semblance of relevance in today's world of marriage equality, virulently anti-gay Brian Brown (of the ironically-named National Organization for Marriage) made an appearance on Fox News last night to talk on Alabama state Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore's feckless attempt to stop same-sex marriages in his state.

Of course, as we all know, last June the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage was a right in this country, and thus making it possible for gay and lesbian couples everywhere in America to wed.

Grasping at straws, Brown tried to make an (illogical) legal case for Moore's impertinence. The results - and response from experienced lawyer Megyn Kelly - were not exactly what Brown was hoping for.

Brown’s opening gambit was the fine legal thinking of Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee (imagine that wedding), which holds that Supreme Court rulings are more, like, guidelines. Kelly lost it a little when Brown said officials shouldn’t “kowtow” to the court (which might be NOM-speak for some kind of man-dairy animal union), then patiently tried to explain the legal concept codified in Marbury vs Madison.

That’s when Brown really stepped in it, telling attorney Megyn Kelly “I think you are misreading Marbury vs Madison.” If Megyn Kelly ever decides to return to practicing law, her new strategy should be to just make faces during opposing counsel’s argument. She’d win every case.
