Darren Criss To Star In Broadway's Hedwig And The Angry Inch

GLEE's Darren Criss to star on Broadway in Hedwig and the Angry Inch

GLEE star Darren Criss has stepped up to be the next actor to star in the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Beginning April 29 for a 12-week limited engagement at the Belasco Theatre, Criss will succeed Hedwig co-creator and original Off-Broadway star John Cameron Mitchell in the lead role of an East German transgender rocker.

Book writer John Cameron Mitchell said, “I've got a grin plastered on my face that Darren is joining the brotherhood of Hedwigs. I LOVED him in How to Succeed. His stage presence is electrifying, his rock and roll credentials and comic timing impeccable and I'm thrilled to be working with him to create a brand-new Hedwig!”

This is Criss' second run on the Great White Way.  In 2012 Criss took over the lead in the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying for three sold-out weeks, which brought in over $4 million at the box office.

John Cameron Mitchell To Return To "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"

Beginning January 21, 2015, John Cameron Mitchell will return to "Hedwig and the Angy Inch" on Broadway for eight weeks.

Mitchell created the role back in the 1990s off-Broadway at the Jane Street Theatre. The current production on Broadway won Tony Awards for Neil Patrick Harris for "Best Actor in a Musical" and Best Revival.

From the New York Times:

“I’m having fun going through the old show in my mind and thinking about throwing in more ad-libs and rock ’n’ roll like we did downtown,” Mr. Mitchell said in a telephone interview, recalling the original runs of “Hedwig” at the Westbeth Theater and Jane Street Theater, where he sometimes performed laying on stage when he was tired or while he was in the bathroom offstage.

“I think it will be more frayed,” Mr. Mitchell said of the way his performance might differ from Neil Patrick Harris’s, who originated the role on Broadway last spring and earned a Tony Award for best actor. “We’ve all changed in the last 25 years. I’ve lost friends who were originally involved with the show. I originally wrote the role to release anger and grief – I’m generally a pretty quiet person – and I haven’t experienced a lot of emotion in that same way in a while. I think I’ll even surprise myself as people come to mind while I’m performing.”

Since Harris' departure Andrew Rannells and Michael C. Hall have performed the lead role in the revival.

Broadway's "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" recoups in 15 weeks

Broadway's "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" has recouped it's initial investment in only three months since opening at the Belasco Theater, thanks in great part to the star-power of Neil Patrick Harris.

The New York Times has the details:

The producers announced on Tuesday that “Hedwig,” a concertlike show about a transgender rock musician from East Berlin, had recouped its capitalization, which was about $5 million, according to investment papers.

The show has elevated Mr. Harris (best known from CBS’s “How I Met Your Mother”) into Broadway’s newest box office star: The average paid admission to “Hedwig” last week was $148.66, the fourth-highest on Broadway, and the show managed to recoup swiftly even though it’s only holding seven performances a week, instead of the usual eight, because of the score’s demands on Mr. Harris.

Harris won the Tony Award this year for "Best Actor in a Musical" for his performance.

Next up - Andrew Rannells ("Book of Mormon," HBO's "Girls") takes over the lead role as Harris departs on August 17th.  We'll see then if Harris was the draw, or the show itself...

Broadway cast recording of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" gets July 1 release date

Nominated for 8 Tony Awards this year, the Broadway production of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" will release the new cast recording on July 1.

The celebrated revival of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask's cult rock musical opened April 22 at the Belasco Theatre with Neil Patrick Harris starring as Hedwig, a fictional East German singer living as a female after botched gender-reassignment surgery. Lena Hall costars as Yitzhak, Hedwig's husband and backup singer, who's desperate to unleash his inner drag diva.

Composer and producer of the album Stephen Trask on the new recording: "Anyone who has spent more than five minutes with me in the last three months knows how excited I am by the new versions of these songs. The talents of Neil and Lena and this amazing f*cking band have made these the best version of the score ever."
