Diver Tom Daley Calls On Commonwealth Countries To Repeal Anti-Homosexuality Laws

UK diver Tom Daley calls for Commonwealth to repeal anti-gay laws

After winning his 4th Commonwealth Games gold medal (with synchronized 10 platform diving partner Dan Goodfellow) on the Gold Coast in Australia where marriage equality recently became legal, Tom Daley called for more Commonwealth countries to repeal anti-homosexuality laws.

Of the 53 countries included in the Commonwealth, homosexuality is illegal in 70% of those nations.

From The BBC:

Homosexuality remains illegal in 70% of the 53 Commonwealth countries.

"Coming to the Gold Coast and being able to live as an openly gay man is really important," said Daley, 23.

"You want to feel comfortable in who you are when you are standing on that diving board, and for 37 Commonwealth countries that are here participating that is not the case."

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Daley added: "I feel extremely lucky to compete openly as who I am, not worry about ramifications. But for lots of people living in those countries it is not the case.

"We have to talk about these things and shine a light on them in order to get change."

Daley is married to Academy Award-winner Dustin Lance Black and expecting their first child this summer.

Tom Daley Dives Into Gymnastics With Olympic Gymnast Nile Wilson

As Olympic (and current world champion) diver Tom Daley notes in the beginning of this video, diving and gymnastics use different sets of muscles, but Daley and Olympic Bronze medalist Nile Wilson find the common ground putting each other through the other's paces.

I have to say, I expected to watch a few minutes of the clip, but was drawn in by how accomplished both athletes are in the other's arena. Daley clearly had a lot of acro-experience for his diving, and Nile was fearless trying out some not-so-simple dives.

And, there is the fact that both are easy on the eyes :)

Watch the boys work it out below.

His victory included beating the Olympic gold medalist, Chen Aisen of China.

Hubby (and Oscar winner) Dustin Lance Black took to Instagram to celebrate: "I already couldn't have loved you more or been prouder so I'll just go full Texan and say Holy Cow! My husband is World Champion! Now let's go honeymoon. I love u @tomdaley1994!!"

UK Olympic diver Tom Daley - "I'm not gay"

Olympic diver and heart-throb Tom Daley poses shirtless for photo shoot

UK Olympic diver and heart-throb Tom Daley wants you to know he's not gay - but doesn't mind if you think he is:

"I think it’s funny when people say I’m gay... I laugh it off.

"I’m not. But even if I was, I wouldn’t be ashamed. It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest what people thought. "

"But I can understand why I have a massive gay following – I spend most of my life half naked in trunks on a diving board showing off my bare chest. I often joke I wear more to bed than I do to work.

"But I’m cool with my gay following. It’s great to have gay fans even though my friends gently take the mick. I just think about my diving.

"If people think I am gay or that I don’t focus on my diving enough and go out too much, there is always going to be an opinion – and if I worry about that too much, then my diving goes downhill."
