Postmodern Jukebox Covers NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye" In 60s Surf Rock Style

I was trying to think of a #ThrowBackThursday post for today, and coming up dry until I got this message from Scott Bradlee and his Postmodern Jukebox crew:

This week, we gave NSYNC’s hit, “Bye Bye Bye” a Quentin Tarantino spin by imagining how it would sound in the soundtrack to “Pulp Fiction.”

Watch the video debut of Tara Louise – another fantastic young vocalist that we found during our #PMJsearch contest – and enjoy the return of our (now Grammy Nominated) Tambourine Guy, Tim Kubart.

So, I decided there was enough "throwback" in this cool twist on N'SYNC to qualify for #TBT.

Postmodern Jukebox Covers Wham!'s "Last Christmas" Andrew Sisters Style

Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox are ringing in the holidays with an Andrews Sisters-style cover of “Last Christmas,” the 1984 pop hit from English duo Wham! The video features vocalists Sara Niemietz, Cristina Gatti, Ariana Savalas and tap dancer Melinda Sullivan.

Fans can pick up Postmodern Jukebox’s 2014 holiday album, A Very Postmodern Christmas at iTunes (note: the album does not include “Last Christmas”).

Postmodern Jukebox teams up with Maiya Sykes for a fantastic 1969 style/Aretha Franklin inspired rendition of the current #1 song in the country, "Hello" by Adele.

Fantastic. The arrangement is spot on and Maiya's vocals are killer.

Postmodern Jukebox Covers "Mad World" Vaudeville Style W/ Puddles Pity Party & Haley Reinhart

New collaboration from Postmodern Jukebox featuring Puddles Pity Party and Haley Reinhart - a "vintage vaudeville" cover of Tears For Fears' "Mad World."

Via Billboard:

"This remake came together quite quickly; Puddles stopped by unannounced, in typical Puddles fashion (he also surprised us at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago just recently!)," Bradlee wrote on his website. So I decided to give Haley a call to see if she was around to stop by, perhaps while wearing a fun hat!"

Bradlee said the difference in height made for a fun juxtaposition in the tradition of old vaudeville, as Puddles--the gloomy one -- begins the song as a dirge and the bubbly Reinhart joins in to liven things up.

"I chose “Mad World” because it’s simply one of the darkest, gloomiest songs to ever become a hit," said Postmodern Jukebox leader Scott Bradlee.

Seven foot tall clown, Puddles Pity Party, joins Postmodern Jukebox for a second tune after rocking the internet with their first collaboration - a cover of Lorde's "Royals" - which to date has over 14 million views.

Puddles is back with a "Sad Clown" cover of "Viva La Vida" from (my fave rock band) Coldplay.

Aubrey Logan is back with Postmodern Jukebox, and they're going back to the shagadelic '60s to bring you the Red Hot Chili Peppers classic, "Give It Away," as it would have sounded in the "Austin Powers" soundtrack.

Not only are the vocals and arrangement on point, but the trio of dancers bring you some Fosse "Rich Man's Frug" inspired visuals.

I'm a big Postmodern Jukebox fan, love what they do reinventing today's pop songs in other idioms.

This time around Scott Bradlee and his crew gives Beyonce's "Single Ladies" a vintage Chicago the Musical style. Great reframing of the song musically - you can check it out on iTunes here.

That said, I'm not sure the Fosse dancer in me buys the choreography here. Great ideas in the staging, just not quite on point stylistically.

They’ve amassed over 300 million YouTube views, 1.4 million subscribers, have performed on “Good Morning America,” topped iTunes/Billboard charts and been covered by NPR, Mother Jones, HuffPost, Mashable, LA Times, etc.

I love me some Dave Koz.

Dave guests on a very different version of the 80s hit "Careless Whisper" with Postmodern Jukebox.

Scott Bradlee, the genius behind Postmodern Jukebox, seeks to reinvent pop songs in what he feels are new, more artistic settings:

"My goal with Postmodern Jukebox is to get my audience to think of songs not as rigid, ephemeral objects, but like malleable globs of silly putty. Songs can be twisted, shaped, and altered without losing their identities–just as we grow, age, and expire without losing ours–and it is through this exploration that the gap between “high” and “low” art can be bridged most readily."

Dave (9-time Grammy Award nominee, don't you know) has a great solo beginning at 1:42 exploring different styles with the song.  He's also a little cagey in the beginning playing a bit then sneaking out.
