2016 Drama Desk Award Winners Announced
The 2016 Drama Desk Award winners were announced last night in New York City.
In a year where Hamilton has dominated so much attention, I think it's important to note Hamilton won Drama Desk Awards last year during it's off-Broadway run, which is why the show is absent among these results.

2016 Drama Desk Award Nominations Announced
The Drama Desk Awards, given annually in a number of categories, are the only major New York City theater honors for which productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway compete against each other in the same category.
This morning Vanessa Williams and Matthew Morrison did the honors in announcing this year's nominees.
Of note:
• The rapturously reviewed Roundabout Theater Company revival of “She Loves Me” received nine nominations, including best musical revival, plus acting awards for cast members including Laura Benanti, Zachary Levi and Jane Krakowski. New musical American Psycho earned eight — although not one for outstanding musical.
• This year's biggest blockbuster - Hamilton - isn't here because it was considered last year during it's off-Broadway incarnation. That will make these awards less of an arbiter for the Tony Awards since they are absent here.
• Also, Shuffle Along earned a total of six Drama Desk nominations. But none for previous Tony Award winners Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, or Billy Porter. Choreographer Savion Glover scored a nod, as did several design elements.

Special Awards: Each year, the Drama Desk votes special awards to recognize excellence and significant contributions to the theatre.
For 2014-15, these awards are:
To the actors who shared a room in the world of A. R. Gurney's The Wayside Motor Inn: Kelly AuCoin, Jon DeVries, Quincy Dunn-Baker, Rebecca Henderson, Marc Kudisch, Jenn Lyon, Lizbeth Mackay, David McElwee, Ismenia Mendes, and Will Pullen.
To Bess Wohl, the Sam Norkin Off-Broadway Award: "For establishing herself as an important voice in New York theater, and having a breakthrough year with the eclectic American Hero, Pretty Filthy, and Small Mouth Sounds. Her writing expresses sensitivity, compassion, and humor with a sure hand."
To John Douglas Thompson: "For invigorating theater in New York through his commanding presence, classical expertise, and vocal prowess. This season he demonstrated exceptional versatility in Tamburlaine the Great, and The Iceman Cometh."
To Ensemble Studio Theatre: "For its unwavering commitment to producing new works by American playwrights since 1968, and enriching this season with productions of When January Feels Like Summer, Winners, and Five Times in One Night. EST's Youngblood program fostered and nurtured Hand to God, setting Tyrone off on his devilish path to Broadway."
To Andy Blankenbuehler: "For his inspired and heart-stopping choreography in Hamilton, which is indispensible to the musical's storytelling. His body of work is versatile, yet a dynamic and fluid style is consistently evident. When it's time to "take his shot," Blankenbuehler hits the bull's-eye."

Drama Desk Awards reinstates Orchestration category
Last week the Drama Desk announced its nominees for the 2011-2012 season celebrating the best of On, Off and Off-Off Broadway. Absent from this year’s list was a category honoring the “Outstanding Orchestrations.”
After hearing the outpouring of concern and support for the category (including an online petition, created by Jamie McGonnigal, with 3,000+ signatures from industry notables and fans), the Drama Desk Executive Board has announced that they will reinstate the category for this year’s awards show on June 3 at The Town Hall.
The Nominating Committee reassembled over the weekend to select this year’s most Outstanding Orchestrations.
This year’s nominees for Outstanding Orchestrations include:
1. Bill Elliott, Nice Work If You Can Get It
2. Larry Hochman, Death Takes a Holiday
3. Martin Lowe, Once
4. John McDaniel, Bonnie & Clyde
5. Michael Starobin, Queen of the Mist
6. Danny Troob, Newsies
“The Drama Desk prides itself on celebrating New York’s rich theatrical community. Our Executive Board appreciates the forthright and passionate response to our nominations announcement and have taken your comments to heart. The Executive Board is very happy to reinstate the Outstanding Orchestrations category and honor the dedication and hard work of this season’s talented orchestrators.” said Isa Goldberg, Drama Desk President.
The 57th Annual Drama Desk Awards will take place on Sunday, June 3, 2012, at 8:00 PM at The Town Hall in Manhattan.

Drama Desk nominations 2012
The Drama Desk was founded in 1949 "to explore key issues in the theater and to bring together critics and writers in an organization to support the ongoing development of theater in New York," according to press notes. The organization began presenting its awards in 1955, and it is the only critics organization to honor achievement in the theatre with competition among Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions in the same categories.
