Richard Anderson, 'Six Million Dollar Man' & 'The Bionic Woman' Actor, Passes Away At 91

Lee Majors (L), Richard Anderson (C), Lindsay Wagner (R)

Ah, man. I can't tell you how much I loved both The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman.

Richard Anderson, who brought to life "Oscar Goldman," the head of the fictional Office of Scientific Intelligence and eventual boss of Six Million Dollar Man "Steve Austin" and The Bionic Woman "Jaime Sommers," has passed away at the age of 91.

Via Hollywood Reporter:

In the highly rated, two-part episode that brought a thrilling end to the 1960s ABC series The Fugitive, Anderson portrayed the brother-in-law of Richard Kimble (David Janssen). He also was Police Lt. Steve Drumm on the final season of CBS’ Perry Mason and Santa Luisa Police Chief George Untermeyer on ABC’s Dan August, starring Burt Reynolds.

After three popular Six Million Dollar Man telefilms in 1973, the Universal TV property was given steady life as an ABC series in January 1974. On the show, Anderson played the chief of the fictional Office of Scientific Intelligence and the boss of Steve Austin (Lee Majors), a NASA astronaut who is injured in a crash and “rebuilt” (at a cost of about $29 million in today’s dollars), becoming a secret agent.

Anderson also is heard in the show’s action-packed introduction: “Gentlemen, we can rebuild him, we have the technology. We have the capability to make the world’s first bionic man.”

The series then spawned The Bionic Woman — starring Lindsay Wagner as Jaime Sommers, a tennis player who’s infused with machinery and brought back to life after a parachuting accident, and Anderson played Goldman on that show (which went from ABC to NBC) as well.

He was the first actor to portray the same character on two TV series running concurrently on two networks.

Both shows ended in 1978, but Universal, prodded by Anderson, made three more bionic telefilms through 1994. As an executive producer, he was instrumental in the casting of Sandra Bullock as a supercharged woman in 1989’s Bionic Showdown.

In a statement, Majors said that he first met Anderson in 1966 when he guest-starred on one of Majors' earlier shows, The Big Valley.

"Richard became a dear and loyal friend, and I have never met a man like him," he recalled. "I called him 'Old Money.' His always stylish attire, his class, calmness and knowledge never faltered in his 91 years. He loved his daughters, tennis and his work as an actor. He was still the sweet, charming man when I spoke to him a few weeks ago."

Added Wagner: "I can't begin to say how much I have always admired and have been grateful for the elegance and loving friendship I was blessed to have with Richard Anderson."

Olivia Newton-John concert in Palm Springs

Great times all around last night at Olivia Newton-John's concert in Palm Springs (technically Indio, but folks may not know Indio, so I'm going by Palm Springs...) at the Fantasy Springs Casino Events Center.

First of all, ONJ is in amazing voice. The entire concert was extremely well sung. I'm so used to the idea that as some singers get older, the voice often loses some flexibility and range. Completely the opposite with Olivia - her voice continues to get better and better. Some of the highlights were Olivia's high, high soprano finish to "Jolene," and her full belt ending to "Weightless."

But my personal favorites were the last two songs of the evening, "Grace and Gratitude" and "I Honestly Love You." After two hours, she was not only in fine singing form but her interpretations were art. Connected, personal, and heartfelt. Just fab.

I also loved seeing other fans of Olivia's that I've gotten to know over the years - David, Mykel, Todd, Virginia...  I can't remember every name so if I forget one it's just me being formerly blond.  But it was great seeing everyone.  Only thing I don't like about these situations is we had to get backstage after the concert so we didn't have a huge amount of time to catch up.  But glad we had time to chat with folks even if it was short :(

Backstage we caught up with not only Leeza Gibbons (who's a friend of Olivia's for many years going back to the Great Walk fundraiser in China for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre) but Lindsay Wagner, the original Bionic Woman! I'm not usually star struck but I've been a fan of Lindsay's my whole life it seems. She spent a few minutes catching up with Olivia, and I have to admit this was one photo op I wasn't missing.

I won't go on too much, but I will say: if Olivia is performing near you (this is a 30+ city tour), GO! Great music and great times. You can find her tour cities by clicking here.

Lindsay Wagner: Bionic Woman to Holistic heroine

Lindsay Wagner has always been committed to the advancement of human potential. This has been evident not only throughout her highly successful acting career, but also in her personal life.

Lindsay Wagner first came to prominence as a result of her iconic portrayal of Jaime Sommers in her Emmy award-winning role as The Bionic Woman. She also won a permanent place in the hearts of audiences around the world and became one of the most popular actresses in international television.

Lindsay has combined her personal experience and many years of study, both Western and Eastern modalities, to develop "Quiet the Mind & Open the Heart" experiential workshops and retreats. These programs are designed to help us access more deeply the peace and joy which is naturally within us and to realize how the conscious and unconscious concepts we carry in the mind often have a life diminishing influence on others and ourselves.

Listen to the radio show above as she talks about how she works to share her experience with others on a holistic journey.

For more information on Lindsay's work with awakening and integrating body, mind and spirit in a natural, holistic way, check out her website here.

Lynda Carter and Lindsay Wagner together

How fabulous is this?  Lynda Carter (the original Wonder Woman) with Lindsay Wagner (the original Bionic Woman) after one of Lynda's performances.

Lynda is touring the country promoting her CD "Crazy Little Things."

I think this is so cool.  I loved both Wonder Woman and The Bionic Woman in the 70s as a kid.  My first celeb crush was Lindsay Wagner.  I never missed her show.  Or TV movies.

I think so much of these two fabulous ladies, here are two recent photos (not backstage in bad lighting).  How fab are they?

The Original Bionic Woman - Lindsay Wagner

OK - color me "geek" - but I am having the best time watching episodes of the original "Bionic Woman" series.

To watch click here.

When I was, let's say - younger, in the 1970s I thought Lindsay Wagner was the most beautiful woman in Hollywood, and the quality she brought to "Jamie Sommers" in the Bionic Woman series was magical. She was gorgeous, vulnerable and had a great sense of humanity. It's not well known, but the role earned Wagner an Emmy Award for "Best Actress in a Dramatic Role" in 1977.

I recently discovered a website where you can see all of the original episodes - commercial free - of the "Bionic Woman" series. I've alrady watched 4 episodes, including three featuring 'Max' the bionic dog (guest starring 70s hottie Christopher Knight). Clearly there was thought given to a possible 'super Lassie' reboot with Max as the star.

(Stop laughing at me - I'm happy).

If you know me - between Lindsay Wagner and a super-loyal super-dog - clearly I'm in retro-heaven.

If you even know what and who I'm talking about, head over to this website and remember some fun days in TV history.

And for those who really love this - go to Amazon and get Season One and newly released Season Two on DVD! Both apparently have a lot of bonus features and commentary by Lindsay and other stars of the show.
