The NFL on Wednesday slapped back at Donald Trump’s tweet that suggested league Commissioner Roger Goodell is “finally demanding” that players stand up during the national anthem.
The correction came after yesterday's announcement that Goodell said he would meet with the league’s team owners to discuss a path forward regarding the current national debate about anthem protests.
As part of his announcement, Goodell shared that while the league believes “everyone should stand for the National Anthem,” no demand was placed on players to stand.
Additionally, the league proposed forming an “in-season platform” to allow players to promote social justice efforts.
But today, Donald Trump seemed to give the impression that Goodell and the NFL had announced an official change in terms of kneeling/standing during the national anthem.
Trump tweeted "It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our great National Anthem-RESPECT OUR COUNTRY."

The NFL pushed back immediately.
“Commentary this morning about the Commissioner's position on the Anthem is not accurate. As we said yesterday, there will be a discussion of these issues at the owners meeting next week. The NFL is doing the hard work of trying to move from protest to progress, working to bring people together,” the league said in a statement.
