AIDS drops from Top Ten causes of death in NYC
For the first time since 1983, AIDS is no longer one of the top 10 causes of death in New York City.
In 2011, AIDS was the number nine killer, with 766 deaths. That number fell to 609 for 2012, dropping the disease off the "Top 10" list.
City officials say better treatment is allowing New Yorkers with AIDS to live longer.
“It’s a tribute to the efforts that have been made...in tackling this epidemic. We are seeing some success,” Bassett said at a City Council budget hearing.
Infections have held steady or slightly declining at around 3,000 new infections a year.
