HBO Documentary: One Nation Under Dog

Americans have always had a love affair with canines, but lost amidst the pampering are unpleasant truths about dog ownership, care and commerce. ONE NATION UNDER DOG: STORIES OF FEAR, LOSS & BETRAYAL offers an eye-opening, three-part portrait of America’s complex relationship with dogs.

The documentary looks at FEAR, LOSS and BETRAYAL in it's three episodes.

In FEAR, a dog owner is taken to court repeatedly for the aggressive behavior of his Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

LOSS covers the deep grief people can experience over the loss of their dogs.

And probably most difficult to watch, BETRAYAL presents an unflinching look at the issues of overpopulation, shelters, rescuing, spaying and neutering. Approximately two million dogs are destroyed in animal shelters each year.

As regular readers of The Randy Report know, dogs play an important part in my life and always have. I'm aware of how, for some, the responsibility of dog ownership falls short. In my home, Bruno, Bear, Tyler and Bandit have my attention every day. It is a relationship I take seriously.

I'll be watching ONE NATION UNDER DOG. If you have HBO and love dogs too, I urge you to watch.

Watch Monday, June 19th at 9:00pm.

Thanks to reader Dave for the tip.

  1. This documentary is an eye opener and will make your eyes water! It took me 2 weeks to get enough courage to watch it, but I finally did. When the BETRAYAL segment comes on, the viewers are warned the first 3 minutes are hard to watch, and boy that was an understatement! I cried and my 2 dogs came right to my side and stayed until it was over. It's as if they knew and were telling me "It's OK, you RESCUED us and that makes it OK!" I love my dogs!

PLEASE spay or neuter your pets and please tell your friends and family about this show and to Pass It On!

Thank you Randy for posting this.

  2. I have posted many times THERE SHOULD BE HARSHER PENALTIES AND LAWS FOR ANIMAL ABUSE. On one hand, I understand how most people see enough problems that humans are suffering through and have no time for animal comapssion. Someone once said /(paraphrased ) ... you can judge a society by the way they treat their animals. I wish I had the money to help all of them. 55,000 cats and dogs are put to sleep DAILY! All of my pets are rescues and I abhore having to "have" a breed/ bred animal. These breeders exasperbate (sp) the problem of unwanted "mutts". So so sad.
